in the vanilla game you can use the Magnifying Glass shows hp and torpor but you have to get pretty close to use it so ghillie suit is a good combo with it.
For unofficial, theres plenty of options.
I use the Super Spyglass:

This gives a lot of info, especially nice is showing wild stats, which you will find very useful when breeding.
And also Healthbars & Torporbars v2:

Lets you easily see your tames getting wrecked by a Basilisk for eg :'(
Magnifying Glas for officials, but you need to get close and personnel to get a reading....but you'll get one.
While I dont like the UI in this game, most do find that things like healthbars and such take away from the appearance of the game. I do think WC were not looking to even try go down that avenue (MMO styling), and to be fair its the right call - it does look pretty ignorant.
Its my laziness and the fact that the mod is a crutch really that I keep using it. It can at least be tweaked (in game), between size/distance/opacity/on/off/text, the pic showing it above is at about 4 on size/opacity (default is 10 and looks grossly intrusive).
If I could have a wish granted (*with regards to this) it would be an option to have a simple small red bar appear only within a certain range and only when hp is below X%. It would take away from the game if it was anything more - like the healthbar mod I use does, but its so convenient ^^'
Im happy theres no bar on the screen. im more for the clean look. but the damage indicator on the dinos that shows how much health it has need some work. or maybe just make a toggle key for health bar so you just hold that when you need to see the health
I had read it didnt work on The Center map, and I was half pleased because it would force me to try play without it ^_^' Its too convenient, if you want a certain gender for mating/boosting, the time it saves... But by the time I tried The Center map, which was only months ago, I think because it was an official map at that point that the mod now works with it - as it seems to with any official map.
Actually, can I just add that the above wish of mine was more a semi-realistic wish. Ideally I wouldnt wish for bars at all. Rather that the effects, sounds, and visuals in game would be clear enough. I find it lacking as is, and when you are risking perhaps tames which took a great deal of time and effort (even on boosting rates!) dying, its a lot.
1. See who's kicking ass on the highways. Winners usually have HP. If you see a turtle kill a rex, you probably should build a dealer-addict relationship with it.
2. Check them out with a spyglass. Higher level, probably higher health. Lower level, probably a lot less.
3. Magnifying glass. If you can simply walk up to it, this works fine, but it only shows max HP.
4. Knock it out. This lets you see all stats in full detail. Just because you knock it out doesn't mean you SHOULD tame it, unless you're starting from scratch, then every HP helps.
