High end Hide hunting
I use the upgrade station mod and play solo, I have a high level Thylo with a maxed out saddle, I can use Theros but they aren't as efficient in battle as I need and with the specific way to harvest I can't hunt with a group. I find that I can spend about a half an hour and get 8-10k hide, that is a lot but when upgrading and trying to get the best gear I can burn through 30k in 10 minutes sometimes (depending on what I'm crafting).

I'm mainly wondering what the best creatures to focus on hunting are, what gives the best amounts of hide and what gives the most hide for the least time to kill, right now I kill everything that can give hide for the most part, only creatures that give my solo Thylo trouble are the Wyverns, Gigas, and Alpha Rex's, but they are easy to avoid.

According to Dododex Hide gathering efficiency is Giga at 1 -> Direwolf -> Reaper -> Sabre -> Thyla at 5 and Theri at 10

In my experience the easiest to kill for the most hide is the Phiomia, but that's an early game target and hunting a specific creature is probably more inefficient than just killing everything you come across. Mainly more size = more resources, so Bronto's are where I'd look first with a high level hide gatherer.

The wiki contradicts your claim, It's quite likely that the giga is best because of it's stature, the game may give bigger predators more overall drops. However the direwolf is ranked with a 4 star gathering efficiency; sabretooth, Thylo, and Thera are the only 5 stars. I wonder which one is more accurate, I used to hunt with a direwolf pack but their lack of armor makes them susceptible to high damage creatures, and their low carryweight make them unusable for long haul hunts.

My main focus was on a creature so I could prioritize their spawn areas. Right now I hunt in Valero's redwoods as the terrorbirds are common and come to me, only downside are the micros thylos and purlovas stunning me or my dino, and the pegos stealing my items. Other than them, I can get a good ammount of rss in a short amount of time. So far the most I get per kill are from the diplos.

Right now I'm thinking a pack of 7 direwolves at high levels set to aggressive is my best bet, only the alpha carnos are a problem but possibly not when fighting 7 wolves. Especially if the Dododex is correct, I did find that the wolves got more than the wiki gave them credit for.

Thankyou very much for the advise, I really appreciate it.

One thing to note i guess is that creatures damage value would likely affect the amount gathered per harvest.

Here's how to get a lot:

- Tame a saber with the majority of points in damage
- Breed until you get one baby with that same high base damage value
- Imprint said baby 100% to increase its damage value after imprinting
- Ride the raised creature with 100% imprint as it will get the imprint bonus which increases damage dealt
- Get an opposite gender of the same dino to follow you around so that it gets a mate boost which increases damage dealt (maybe put in on passive as you don't want it to harvest as it doesn't have the rider imprint bonus and will get less)
- For the creature that you imprinted on and riding put all of the levels into damage so that you harvest more (maybe you can use the mate as a pack mule and put it's levels into weight)
- You can try to raise up damage mutated babies and stack those up so you get a higher base damage value but that takes a long time

So basically just stack your damage where ever possible,

You can replace saber with any of the other 5 star tames and you should get tons of hide... Not exactly sure how the Therizinos power harvesting would affect things but it should be heaps more.

Anyways it would be hard to measure a wolf against a saber because there are quite a few variables, base damage of dino, level of damage in dino, other boosts and bonuses, efficiency rating? You would have to be sure that damage dealt is exactly the same and if not you're going to get results that vary from the wiki?

A large advantage for the giga is its sheer size and beeing able to oneshot weak stuff while walking in a rather large aoe.
I used to just walk through any places with a bit more dense packed dinos and kill them while casualy strolling across the place.
They also have a rather good weight so you more need to care about hitting max slots than max weight.
Last time i've done so is a bit longer ago, so might some parts have changed.

As soon as I got a grinder I never needed to farm for hide. Just grind up any unwanted saddles and you will soon find yourself with more hide than you can use.

Wasn't the grinder brutally limited in what you can get to exactly prevent that?

If you use S+ you can adjust the salvage material amount returned from the S+ grinder, just be careful not to set it above 100% as you can run into crash territory grinding certain items.
As to what animal to use to farm hide i use a theri, levelling its delicate harvesting and using the c attack (one that gets berries) can yeild some amazing results.
Another thing you can do is breed and raise animals specifically for slaughtering and than use your gather animal of choice on their bodies. This is however dependant on your breeding multipliers, and usually works better the higher those are.

There are ways to make this a non issue with the upgrade station using it in a slightly different way.

Instead of upgrading to an ascendant saddle requiring tons of mats. Upgrade from primative to green -only-

Get your crafting skill for your character to over 300%(higher is better to make it go faster).

Then take the green, uncommon saddle you have and craft. Its stats will be slightly higher(randomish). Then go to to the upgrade station and convert it to a blue print.

Go craft with the new blueprint a new saddle. This then will(due to your crafting skill) increase in stats again but still be a green blueprint.

Eventually you can get the stats up to the allowed maximum rinsing and repeating this for weapons etc too BUT the final blueprint will be uncommon green and only require those minimal mats.

You cal also alternatively use the blueprint crafting(not for everything) to get good yields too on stuff you break down.

According to the wiki, Phiomias can yield a lot of hide. Easy enough to kill too as they don't fight back.

I raise phiomias and cryo them for passive level gain. Then i pull batches of them out, put all levels in health, and then slaughter them and harvest with a high hide / meat gatherer that has all levels in melee. Gets me tons of meat and hide, and with a good greenhouse farm to produce lots of mejoberries for feeding and breeding, it is free. Fairly easy to scale up the operation too, if you really want to crank out crazy meat and hide amounts. (plus the raw meat by-product of this is great for your carnivore breeding program.) All you need to do is breed the phiomias for health, as that seems to make a difference on the amounts given.

grinder gets me a dumb amounts of hide.
if by some miracle im out of hide. i kill a bunch of ovis and chainsaw them for tons of hide, meat, pelt. its a win win win.
the pelt gets fed to the gachas, the hide for crafting, the mutton of feeding my dinos.
