use a tame calculator and set in the weapon damage
http://www.survive-ark.com/taming-calculator/ i use this one
Also, torpor from tranq arrow stacks, so if you know the exact number of arrows you need to hit your target with, just shoot it constantly, and after that you can wait for it to get KOd.
Longrifle darts if you need to KO something that is "delicate" like some stubborn flyers or high level Ptera's (flyers take extra damage Ron ranged weapons so you might kill one trying to KO it if you shoot an extra one off or something messes up your shots). However darts are obviously more expensive, both in resources to make and they use 3 narcotics but only apply the torpor of about 2 if I remember correctly.
I've however been a bit more successful downing Quetzals with a crossbow's slightly faster reload speed than a rifle (when not using a quetzal trap for the very first one).
Wood bows are a waste as you apply less torpor per arrow and so you'll need more of them, PLUS if you don't pull back all the way you're wasting them more so (less damage = less torpor).
Compound bows are better than bows but worse than crossbows, again, all things being primitive quality (which is all you have starting out).
It does right now and has been for most part of the year using crossbows. I can just count out the arrows as I fire then watch the torpor go up on a rex for example, using a magnifying glass (obviously when it's fleeing and up against a cliff, hehe).
Magnifying glass is very handy with torpor tracking on stubborn or glitch tames. On SE we noticed everything took way more arrows than on Island because a good portion wouldn't register! (Lag or ping on our server, who knows, yet gameplay was smooth as usual).
