alpha raptor
Ok. So I am new to ark and have finally expanded out of my starting zone to the hidden lake area. Built a pretty impressive base out of wood and stone and I am getting my Dino's built up. I was out gather materials and got jumped by an alpha raptor. Killed it but lost most of my Dino's. Now I was back at base taking a few more and another alpha raptor just ran into the hidden lake area. My remaining Dino's I'm sure are on it's menu.

My question is, can alpha raptors be trapped in a large bear trap? So I can kill it? Or am I just totally screwed. I have no idea what to do. How fast do they destroy stone and wood if I shoot it from up top?

HL also benefits from metal spikes at the ravines coming in and quite often up on top of the cliff. Without dinos to defend the inner, use a a crapton of x-plants.

If you can kite, you'll kill an a_rapper it sooner than it'll wreck the joint if you have the dps to do so (and you can get it to come with you). Again, metal makes that a certainty.

But I don't have any of that right now. No metal stockpiled or anything. I've only been playing a week ish. But I have enough to make a large bear trap. So my question still remains. Can I imobilize it in the trap to kill it? I still have no idea how to kite in the game but I'm sure the raptor is alot faster than I am?

Agreed with above. Metal or nothing. After getting the engrams or bp's for it if you can't build it in metal, don't build it. That's my philosophy at least. I don't wanna have to run around reparing ten thousand base pieces every damn time I log on.

Wiki says they can be trapped. Imo that's a waste though at low level, just get on a rock they can't reach you at and bow/crossbow them to death. If metal is scarce I wouldn't be wasting it on traps (for alphas. I'd use them to tame if I absolutely had to).

Cant be traped but it cant destroy stone. So build stone walls and kill it

Hidden lake is pretty but it's a horrible location. See the ledge overlooking it, one day an alpha rex or giga is going to come over it and into your base. Not today, not tomorrow, but one day. If the base isn't on high ground, it's a bad location, simple.

As for Alphas Raptors. They are very common at the lake. Early game I like to kill them with birds (ptera or argy) because they can hover over their heads and you can LMB spam while the alpha cannot hit you back, they just stand therre looking at you and then die.

When ive made bases at hidden lake i usually do so at the top of the cliffs and avoid the area below for 2 reasons; Beavers and predators. I dont like blocking beaver spawns as a rule so building up top allows the beavers to make dams to farm. Not only do alpha raptors spawn in and around the lake but so do carnos, sarcos and troodon, and the nearby frozen tooth mountain is known to spawn gigas that can and do wander into the hidden lake area.

If moving to higher ground isnt an option than the best way to make the lake safe is to use dino gates as a wall around the perimiter of the cliff tops so nothing can fall in short of a titanosaur, gating off the three entrances and placing 2x2 foundations with either a single doorframe or wall/windowframe all around the lake to block spawns.

Yeah the wiki says they can be trapped but the wiki for the trap says it can't trap alpha species so I was hoping someone who has tried it could confirm. As for getting on a rock. I MIGHT have a rock nearby but it's in my base area right now so I can't exactly choose the battlefield.

What is LMB spamming?

the cliff on the left from the entrance to the sea (east, dark with sparkels) is great for a base at hidden lake, most dinos are not able to get there and all the big ones come from the opposide. One gate and a ramp for your beast is all.
LMB left mouse button ( mostly used for attacks^^)

@IA_Izeith

Early game, if you want to kill an alpha raptor, tame a trike. Even a low lvl trike can kill it due to massive knockback, you just time the attacks and it never touches the trike. (knocking the raptor downhill if it's uneaven terrain)

Don't bother with the chain bola, it won't hold the dino for all that long.

take it to a lake. pop on a raft, get it to swim after you. stop driving the raft, pop your 3 or 4 shots, hop back into the drivers seat, drive away. rinse repeat until its dead.

im hoping my ptera is still alive. I had a lvl 44 ptera but when I went to get water at the beach right by my house I was killed by a Terror bird (as if my luck in the last 20 min wasnt bad enough) anyway im hoping it survived. and if it did I am going to try to use it with my 2 trikes to kill the alpha. I hope it works. After the first alpha attack I only have 2 pteras, 2 trikes, a lvl 2 iguanadon, 1 para, and 1 dilo left... uhg... my trikes are level 4 and level 20 ish I think though so im hoping they kick its butt.

oh and to make it even worse.. when I died getting water from the terror bird, it is JUST becoming night time. ( I didnt think I had enough water to make it through the night, that is why I was going to the beach to fill up in the first place) so now I have to go get my body, and hope my ptera is still alive.. all in the dark, then come back and try to kill the alpha.

The alpha raptor spawn rate on Island is outrageous now compared to what it used to be. I've killed 25 of the damn things in 4 days.

Building more will help. Dinos only agro on you if they see you, and only structures if they cant get to you. A stone wall can buy you plenty of time to evacuate. They will eventually get bored. With 2 cross bows and a crapload of arrows you can kill them before they can break a stone door way. You should also work on some stronger animals, a group of carnos, sabers or baryonyx can take one. Dire bears, megatherium or rexes are the next step up. Youll want some double stone walls up or to start on metal if you want to live through the alpha rexes and giggas that spawn though.
