Server admin password keeps resetting to default
I'm an admin of a my own dedicated server. Long story short, another player on the server knows the admin password and started abusing it. I went to change the password, but no matter what I do, it keeps reverting back to the default password. I've tried turing off the server, changing it, then starting the server again. Or just changing it, then hitting reset on the server. No matter what I do, the server admin password stays default.

Any ideas?

One thing you should to is first take the server off line and ban the steam account of the player causing the issues. See if that helps.

If not and you're renting the server, talk to the hosting service to get more help.

Well, he's a kind of a friend of a friend and I want to avoid banning him until I exhaust all other options.

Windows or Linux server?
If you use Linux as i do and use a server_start.sh then you have to change the password THERE (or both) , this overwrites/rules the password set in the .ini

Friend of a friend messing with a server that I had by getting into admin related stuff. Yeah my friend should be in agreement with me to ban, else they're not really a friend.

I use W10 but it's a rented server from Host Havoc, I make changes with their online dashboard. I have changed other settings in the .ini like tame speed and gather rate with no issues in the past.

kinda all depends on your server... ARK seemingly runs better on Windows. No offense to the Linux users, but ARK is coded with Windows as its first priorities. If it is Windows, try downloading ARK Server Manager. You can use your existing installation so you don't have to lose anything. It will give you a bit more control and will take care of the password issue.

Oh ok so a rented server.
Can you download your ini file or at least view it online? Is there a admin password set?

If there´s no admin password in the .ini and you can´t change it by the dashboard then i think you have to contact the support of your hosting company.

You may be right but the thing is Windows isn´t free (anymore) and i can run an Ark server on an ubuntu terminal-only so no desktop or anything else which takes memory.
Mine runs on a crappy amd office cpu with 8gb old spare ram, just the onboard gpu, behind a 10mbit upload connection and it runs absolutely fine for the few friends of mine and me (most time just 2-3 people) even with mods.

Yes, like I said I can modify the ini file using their dashboard. There is an admin password and when I change it, it just resets to default when I restart the server.

Do they allow you to modify the launch command line options? It's very likely that the admin password is being set there (it would overwrite the ini).

I think I found the solution. I'm not personally renting the server. My friend is. I'm just an admin. When he logged in to change it, it worked. I guess it makes sense the only person who can change passwords is the one that owns the account.

I know this was resolved but for the record, with HostHavoc you can't change the admin password or server password from the INI files it must be done from the CommandLine editor which overrides any changes to those settings in the INI file when the server is started up.

If you have the password in your GUS.ini and in the commandline where you start the server, then the password in the GUS.ini is overwritten with the one from the commandline.
I think thats your problem. Simply change it in the commandline too.

Btw: Default password is none :)

edit the config

If the admin password is being passed by the server launch command, you have to change it there. Updating it in the INI will do not good because the launch string for the server will over write it every time.
