Problems taming trikes.
I'm new to the game. Playing for a couple of days.

I've tamed dilos, parasaurs and others, but everytime I try a trike I finish my inventory before doing it.

Last time it was more than 10 tranquilizer arrows and somewhere between 50 and 100 stones and it didn't fall. It was level 25 I think.

Is this normal? Should I stock up on arrows to tame them or is there something wrong here?

BTW I'm on the island on the official servers.

dododex is a great resource for these numbers.

The problem isn't you not being prepared enough. It's you lacking some knowledge because you are new. The Trike has a headshot multiplier, but it is a "negative" one. Headshots do less damage to a Trike, so try to hit it in the side/leg etc to maximize the damage you deal (and therefore torpor as well)

This is not to say I'm advising against s taming calculator. Just that it's only part of your issue in this particular tame.

Sounds like you're shooting them in the head. Shoot them anywhere else but their head. As others have mentioned, trikes take reduced damage/torpor from headshots.

Don't shoot them in the head, if you are.

Easiest for beginner is to stand on a rock where it cannot get you and slingshot the body until it runs due to high torpor, chase it down and finish it.

You can also run around the base of a tree and it can't get you due to its turning circle

Don't waste arrows early game

oops, I was aiming at the head! :P

I'm ok with it being difficult. I only wanted to know if it was "normal" and not a bug. :)

btw, I'm on official PVE. just because....

should I change? why? I'm not a hardcore player, and probably be playing on my own and not joining a tribe.

any links with info on the matter?

Dang. I've put hundreds of hours into this game, this is probably the 5th or 6th time I've started on a new world and progressed well past trikes, and I'm working on wyverns right now.............. but I never realized trikes take less damage on headshots. Dang. I mean, really, though. :P Thanks for teaching this old dog a new trick, you guys!

General rule of thumb for tranq taming any creature, don't aim at any parts that look any way protected or armoured, i.e. spikes, shells, etc.

It's really a matter of preference, but the difference for you will mostly come down to this: Official servers are laggy and overcrowded, and they're not moderated, so if you ever need help, you probably won't get it.

If you find a good unofficial, there will be a lot more space to build, a lot less lag, and helpful Ammons that might be able to do a rollback if the server glitches, and will probably be able to help if you get a dino stuck somewhere. (It happens... often. :P I can almost guarantee you'll get a dino stuck in a cave or a weird ground divet at some point if you keep playing ARK. I don't know anyone that's managed to avoid this completely.)

Unofficial servers can also boost the rates in the game so things don't take as long. A decent trike might take, what, half an hour to tame in official servers? Just you get ready for the bronto or worse, if you sick with this game, a giga. You might have to devote am entire day to a giga tame.

Unofficial can also use mods. Some of these don't give any practical advantage, just new, pretty building stuff. Other mods adjust balance our add new behaviors and whatnot for dinos in the game. Others still give you awesome new utility tools that automate or streamline some of the game mechanics.

Really, I think most players will recommend unofficial servers, myself included. But it's your choice to make.

sounds good, I'm going to check some unofficial servers before I spend more time in here. :)

Thanks everyone!
