Otters Starving
The only way I find to feed otters is feeding them fish by placing it in their inventory. However fish cooked or not spoils quick and the otter will not eat from feeding throughs. (Unless filled with fish) My point is, otters are omnivores and will eat things like mice and frogs as well reeds.

Mine always die off :(

Mine have no problem eating fish from the trough, they are greedy little buggers though admittedly, all that cuteness comes with a cost. Get a decent water mount and kill a few sharks and stuff, fish meat for days.

As far as I know otters in the game only eat fish, normal meat won't work for feeding them.

The problem is everything eats fish first, so you have to get a huge amount of fish or a second throug other dinos can't use.

Otters also don't seem to extend spoil timers for food in their inventory, so what food you do get for them doesn't last long.

I just learned the solution to this yesterday. I was having the same problem with my ichthyornis. Solution: make a second feeding trough and use the radial menu to set it to include only otters and any other critter who can only eat fish. Then fill that trough with fish.
Additionally if you need more fish easily, tame an ichthyornis (a low level one, anything over about lvl 50 takes forever to land). They are shoulder pets who will catch fish for you if you set them to "hunt and retrieve" + aggressive.

I know this is a few months old, but I've noticed that the otters will only eat RAW fish meat until they've matured. Once they become juveniles they will eat from the feeding troughs but they will still only eat raw fish meat out of it. Sorry if this is old news by now and I just couldn't find anything about it.

Sound like the otters want to go fising for them selves .... Have you taken them on a fish run?

Wildcard really needs to fix the fish feeding issue, (all animals should eat meat) and do anyway with the Cakes for feeding non-poly producing snails!

The grinding everyday for special food for fake pets is insane

Are you using a Mod? The only options I have on my Trough radial menu is Inventory & Destroy

I'm curious of this also. I'm assuming S+? I just let all of mine starve; there's plenty of real meat available in my troughs and they choose to be picky! XD

Comparing the otters to real world ones is pointless. The creatures in the game have their sets and functions for dev intended reasons and not player's expectations from outside preconceived sources. Sometimes there can be overlap but not always.

That said,

Otters only eating fish is only part of the issue. Food value for fish is slightly lower(ie numerically) . This means any meat eaters will pull fish from the tough to eat first before touching the other meats. Not only does that mean that fish gets gobbled up faster, it also means that due to some of the eating intervals of those dinos, they'll eat more/sooner than the otters. This sometimes is a common reason for their not being able to get fish to eat because the other dinos in timing get it eventually before they do and it empties.

Best thing I always recommend is setting a seperate trough -way- out of range of the other dinos with which fish is only put in and otters or similar only eat from.
