83C avg on Epic with a 1080TI poseidon and 1080p res
Is that normal? I underclocked the card and temps stay at 70C but then I drop from 60 to 50 FPS stable.

depending on the setting for your GPU-fan the 80C° are normal for a OCed GPU.

especially if your card runs only with air cooling.

if it hits those temps with active water cooling then you must check your cooling system (to few radiator area, pump to weak, etc)

It's not OCed :/ The card is a hybrid card and I'm thinking the temps get that high because it's a hybrid or because the card is defective?

Could just be a general lack of airflow in your cabinet as well.
If air cooled and the general flow isn't keeping up there is nowhere for the hot air to escape.
If its a single fan one (I just quick googled so might ofc not be same) it doesn't sound that scary tbh.

if a GPU has a usage of 100% (or close to this) temps of 70-90C° are normal.
with air cooling.

for water cooling it depends on radiation area, fans and the water pump.
f.e. my Sea Hawk 1070 with a OC to 2000MHz gets a working temperature of 44C° maximum (CPU is also water cooled in the same circulation)

yes the poseidon is a hybrid card.
that means that the waterblock alone is weaker than a normal water block. the same goes for the air cooler, it is weaker than a normal air cooler.

so if you only use one of the two cooling systems the card gets hotter than normal.

such a card needs both, water and air cooling to work properly.

my 1080ti was running at 60-70 with an air cooler. Took the old water cooler from my broken 980ti and put it on the 1080ti and it now runs around 45

Thanks for the informative reply, I'll call the shop tommorow and ask if I can RMA it for my money back or an exchange with a strix card.

I could buy a AIO watercooling kit from thermaltake for my card but I'm afraid of leaks.

Hey im using AIO Predator from EKWB and my Card is running at 50° Max Oced and ive never seen any leaks. Your Cards Fan might be damaged or theres a profile that keeps the fan on low rpm. So check the running speed of the Fan. Should be on 100% when it hits the max spot (around 70° i believe). Also check if you have a Tuner installed and the Voltage is still on Stock Voltage.

And as it was said the poseidon needs to be in a Watercooler Loop, preferably with two Radiators.

AIO cooler are mostly not better than a good air cooler but expensive.

also your card has already a cooler that is stronger than a air cooler (but weaker than a water cooler) if both cooling systems are used.

also if you replace the stock cooler on your card you will lose the waranty of the card (in most cases).

and of course, the price for your card and the price for a AIO together is propably over the price for a card with a real water cooler. and way over the price of a card with a good air cooler like the MSI GamingX.

@Neokoshin
he has a hybrid card and only uses one of the two cooling systems. even with 100% fan speed this card will be hotter than a normal air coold card due to the missing performance of the water part.

this picture shows it perfect:

air only = worse than other air cooled cards
air + water = better than other air cooled cards (and AIO-cooler) but worse than a real water cooler

Is your fan even stepping up as temps increase? I found the stock NVIDIA settings aren't always up to the task

Download and install MSI Afterburner and then tweak the fan settings to increase as the temp increases. https://www.msi.com/page/afterburner

If you still have problems. Clean you computer and maybe apply new thermal compound.

83C is the point of throttling, any non ref cooler shouldnt hit that (without a very aggressive OC), and absolutely not a hybrid!

I have a Strix and OC'd to low 2000s (2047). Did that day1 and was so happy with it I didnt try push it, with just +8% power too. It has hit a 72C peak, but usually when gaming(100%) its 68-70C depending on ambient.

I RMAed it and will be getting a Strix once it processes!

No its 85 C for the newest Nvidia Generation. So 83 is fine.

With "MSI Afterburner" (Software) you can change the temp target to a lower value. You don't have to undervolt your card.
Simply change the temp target to 80 or something like that. The card will then steer it by choosing the right frequencies.
