I'm mostly sure the zombie's can't be scared with a compass pointing north....
It might be better to learn some sword play or getting into archery for the Zombie apocalypse.

On every single compass ever build the needle points to magnetic north. That's the definition of a magnetic compass.
The confusion is that some compass faces are made to be held in place and you read the bearing that is under the needle to get your current headding, while others are meant to be read by rotating the face until the needle is over the N and reading the bearing that is still right side up.
Ark's compass is the second kind, but they didn't give us any controls to rotate the compass face so it's not very user friendly as the face marking are actually useless and people who don't know how to identify the different types of compass can be easily confused by assumign the face markings are supposed to be useful and therefore it must be the otehr kind.
A more intuitive implementation would be if they got rid of the face plate and put an "N" on the north end of the needle. A more useful implementation would be if they let us rotate the compass face/body.
But don't worry, the map thumbtack now has been changed to an idiotproof blue arrow which now does just that.
but we saw that pirate guy do it in that caribbean movie /s
... what have you done. How did you even find this..
If they haven't figured this out in 2 years, its a moot point.
Generally, you want to be able to rotate a compass in your hands so that, for example, you can spot a place you want to get to, turn the compass so North is under the needle, then read off the course you'll need to hold to get there (or use a rotating bezel to mark your desired course, if your compass is even a little bit fancy.) Doing that with the Ark compass is a pain since it always has North pointing away from you.
You can also use it with a string and a map to find the correct course to a place you can't see.
ffs why... why do this... why...
