Taming Philomia
So I am new to this game and want an animal that I can ride. I tried to knock out a philomia to tame it and it ran away. What is the best way to tame it?

shoot it in the ass so it runs towards a cliff or some rocks where it cant run any further. Continue to shoot it in the ass until it falls unconscious Xd Mejo berries into the inv of it and a few minutes later its yours ;-)

This is the easiest way. A bola stops smaller creatures for thirty seconds. A low level Phiomia can be knocked out in that time with a slingshot. Keep in mind though, the Phiomia cannot harvest anything.
A good early tame is the raptor. Hit it with a bola, then shoot it in the face with tranq arrows.

trikes are great as well they arent to bad at fighting since they have good knockback and are great for harvesting berries just dont aim for head when knocking it out since its armored you need to aim for the body

Right. The armored head and knockback also makes it a good battle mount for the early game. Once leveled a bit they can even take on rexes, with a few trikes you're set.

Trike should be your first tame (or one of your first) followed by beaver/doed/anky in my opinion. There are millions of opinions, but this would come up quite often. For all of them, getting them trapped one way or another is always best (whichever trap method works for you). Bolas are great for smaller animals, but will not work on larger ones (need chain bola at later levels for that). Go smack a trike and run around til it gets stuck. Then just shoot with tranq arrows or rocks or whatever til it sleeps :)

First of all, welcome to ark.

Second, a phiomia while you can ride it, isnt a good first dino option. They are easy to die and eat more often than other dinos(this is because they poop more and poop is used to make fertilizer for advanced crops. They are also a good source of meat when you kill wild ones and hide too.

A better all around first tame is a trike. They can defend themselves decently, gather berries and thatch etc.

As for the running away part, that's almost true of all the animals, especially if for some once their torpor(the bar for falling asleep) becomes closer to being filled.

For some you can lure them or herd them into rocks or a building you've created to trap and tame them in. For others you can use a bola to temp make them not run(doesnt last but for a very short time), and others you just have to chase n shoot as you go(but be ready at a moments notice to run away yourself(especially if a predator) if they turn around to attack you).

aye want to get a trike early on and beaver, doed and ankylo when you can but personnaly i like to prepare for the kibble tree ASAP so i get 1 male and 2 female dilos and also 1 male and 5 female dodos then i use the dodo eggs to get a decent pteranodon followed by a low level oviraptor to boost egg drop rate sooner you can get that oviraptor the better makes such a big difference later on OP since your new to game ill leave link to kibble page on wiki so know what im talking about recommend reading up on it
