100 GB's free to install a 21 GB game? Why?
Ark only takes up 21 GB, so why do I need 90 to 100 GB free to download and update it? I had to clear off that much data last night before it let me start the download. I had to turn my pc off at one point and when I turned it back on, it won't start to download again. Most of it is downloaded now. 2 GB is left to download, and I have 44 GB free. This is just insane, why does it do this? And how can I get this game installed without clearing out another 100 GB just to download the next 2 GB ? Edit Ok I cleared off about 60 GB and it started to continue the download. But this is still pretty bad, considering that the game only takes up 21 GB.

Except it only needs to download 21 GB. What part of that don't you understand? Maybe you have a ton of mods installed?

Look you wally the file size it is downloading is not the file size that you end up with, capiche? so wether you see 20gb or 10 gb or whatever your system is having to deal with that compressed data and move it from one place to another... imagine the 20gb download as bogus. Like emptying a females small handbag onto the floor and suddenly wondering how the feck do they get all that stuff in that small space.

...fourth time: 21GB was the baseline, now it wants to grab all the patches etc and it won't start until you have enough room. I encountered that very same thing so I moved Ark to a bigger drive and it started downloading more content.

Why is this so hard to accept? Ark has a huge install foot print.

If the game is downloading 100 GB, it should say that on the download. But it does not. Of all the games I have ever installed on my computer, from Steam, Origin, Battle.net, Etc, none have done something like that. So if that is what this does, then that is pretty messed up.

Ark's download system is the problem here.

Id love to see you manage the latest 130Gb Call of Duty.... Ark is a massive open world with more wildlife than ive ever seen. Not to mention the various systems in play and the gorgeous graphics. You want all these features, you're going to pay for it with drive space. Future titles are only going to get bigger

You are either really thick, or a troll....

Let's try this again. The game itself is 100GB, if not more. However the download file (which is compressed!) is 21GB. It clearly states that when it asks you to have more than 100GB of free space.

Comprende ?!

130 GB for another generic FPS game? What kind of person would think that was a good idea?

It said 21 GB when the download started. It not once said it would take 100 GB, but it refused to install, so I kept deleting data off my computer until it did begin to install. I am not going to install it at this point. It is just insane that it would need that much data.

Your computer could experience issues as well if the drive with the OS has less than 40gigs of space left on it so be careful of that too.

Let's try this with smaller words: Game bigger then 21GB, game is really 100GB+. You need bigger computer.

That's funny, the game is 21 GB, the download is very clear about that Even if it was 100 GB my computer is plenty big enough. I could install 900 GB worth of games and still have data left. I payed for this game, played it, and should be able to play it again, if it would install.
It is COMPRESSED into 22 gb. After unpacking, ark is over 100gb. That is pretty standard for the amount of content. And as for being mad about "ARK's way if doing it", it's a steam thing, WC doesn't rly control that part I believe.

Aye, I'd much rather download 22Gb than the 80 odd uncompressed that is ARK.

Ya, this seems like an odd choice to complain about.

Do you know how compression works? it is used by a lot of games to save up on space, but since ark doesn't want to introduce a loading screen whenever you walk in and out of a cave, If has to have all files readily available. So after the download it simply unpacks all files and leaves them there.

It has to do with how Steam handles updates.
First you need space for the download data.
Then you need the space to decompress it.
Third, you need space to back up the data being updated.
And only after all of this is allocated can you download an update and after it is done do you get the space back.

It is not the game devs fault, it's Steams "fault" because if you download something and they DIDN'T do this and something interrupted the updating process then you need to reinstall the entire game from scratch.

Best explanation ever.
