Don't Alt F4, that saves the game. Closing via task manager doesn't, not for me anyway. And the autosave can be configured in the ini (can't remember if its the game or usersettings)
If you're in single player or own your own server, then saves depend on the last time via the saving interval occurred or a manual save otherwise. In general if there is a goal to exit but not retain something that was done(like in sp) best to just reload a past save manually that you stored seperately as a backup(but that is a bit involved).
Perhaps knowing why you're wanting to do this can better help give you some other alternative suggestions if applicable?
i believe there are miniprograms to do it. but a shortcut on your desktop and copynpaste is probably easier and quicker
Then you dont need to go to all the trouble in single player to mess with saves then. Just get the death helper mod. Lets you create a special "grave" that you can place anywhere(most put near their bed/respawn spot) and you simply click it and all your items are returned to you. This also can be very helpful in bad situations where your corpse or corpse bag fall under the map too.
Additionally you can get the mod pet finder to show you where pets you misplace had gone to.
Game becomes so much more interesting and with more utility when you join the majority of players and start using mods.
and even that is retrievable
