Best zone to live in?

Hi :) Me and a friend started to play online (he's new to the game, I played only in SP and some months ago), and I was trying to undersrand in wich zone of the map (for the moment we should play on "The Island") we should construct our base.
Could you give me any advice?

south 2 is you are new to the game

Assuming you can get to it Herbivore Island is the safest place to be on The Island. I usually recommend that newbies spend some time there to figure out the crafting/building system without fear of getting eaten every 5 minutes.

Or, ya know, you could totally just do the Doomsday plan of throwing him to the wolves until he learns to survive. Both have their merits. =P

West 3 is the best. It's reasonably safe and has easy access to most resources.

Define reasonably... I'll admit there are resources but if you go to south zone 2 there are metal deposits just up the hill from a giant stone Arch in the southern most part of south zone... Also, there is less of a chance of Rex spawns in South Zone 2. Spinos spawn much further up river. Beaver dams will pepper south zone 2 and make it much easier to get cementing paste if buildings are further inland.

You can get crystal from a nearby cave in south zone 2 as well.. wait a minute, that means that West zone is garbage o.e... Even Argentavis birds spawn near south zone.... There is an oil well just off shore east of the Stone Arch... Yeah, Obby is even located near the jungle just up stream and on a cliff near spino/jungle river... everything you need is closer to this starter area.

I have never run into anything worse than a dilo unless you go up closer to the snow. By the river and waterfalls it's always safe. No argys either unless you go to the snow.
