(Update) Ragnarok underground caverns: A PvP players Dream
So I recently started branching out from my main base to find a more secure location on my private server since the pvp weekend has begun and summarily I got raided (no surprise there) so I've started looking for a more "defensible" location when I decided to check out the castle. Well after fighting off waves of enemies and making it to the bottom I found a water tunnel and dark as pitch to where my flashlight barely helped. After almost dying by drowning I surfaced to find a massive cavern (haven't explored much of the caves yet so this was new to me) now some areas are wide open while others would be a royal pain to get to on a pillar structure protected by a few layers of wall. After deciding on a base location and marking coordinates I began exploring and after 2 hours of wandering found a tiny hole.to the surface (if this is any indicator there may only be a few access points to thus cavern that is loaded with metal and crystal!) Which has made me think that if you can memorize this network and grow some X plants and start placing turrets you could have a defensible base that few dinos could ever hope to attempt an attack on! Check it out fellow Ark Survivors cause the caverns may become the most popular location to build a secret bunker!

Oh trust me those guys suck! My server runs a dino count of 4! They spawn everywhere! Hence the pillars with spike walls 5 spikes deep!

Yeah i know the "dark cave" but there are like 4 entrances or so around the map (one is the one under the castle you´ve found), i think you can even walk with a paracer+platform down there.
Also, keep in mind that you will receive 6x damage to all structures you´re building down there.

Ah didn't know that 6x damage was a thing but I feel like with enough perimeter defense it would be nearly suicide to try

If you're in the Metal/crystal Cave there are at least 4 Entrances, one is a Underwater entrance to the open Sea, one goes to the Castle, one goes to the Cave Entrance in the swamp trench around the Castle and the forth one goes to the Cliff where those Metal infested Rocks (on the shoreline behind the castle. At least two of these entrances are rather large ones.

They mention this at the same time that they mention buildable caves. Caves have always given increased damage to structures, ruins too.

Might as well not even build in caves at all. Someone could ♥♥♥♥-slap a metal wall and it crumbles to the ground. :P

Not really the caverns are soo massive that you can make layers of defense that after only getting through a few of them will become soo resource intensive that it's not worth the trouble. We've already put 3 metal behemoth gates in a airlock system at the swamp entrance and behind the 1st and second is a line of 5 turrets (cheap and loaded with only 100 bullets each) beyond that we are gonna add extra layers of defense at high and low angles along with layered walls and a few hidden X plants to stave off missiles. Currently my whole tribe (8 people not counting me) are working on it and then we will secure a speed route to the ocean entrance for easy oil and pearl farming. So far I don't see a negative even with the extra damage cause of the megalosaurus spawns and how utterly dark the caves are (night vision barely helps)

We are built in a 6x damage area, i wouldnt shy away from it because the 6X damage, yes stuff folds up pretty quick. Though if you build and defend properly its not a problem at all, especially if you secure the entrances before the 6X damage, Make it a world of hurt before you even get to the 6X!
Actually it's kinda funny cause the people on my server have noticed that our base was raided and abandoned and they are currently trying to find the "new location" problem is we've already gotten a few layers of defense that could fend of a decent attack the base is still a wide open mess but I think our Rexes in the Dark will be sufficient... will update later!

goodluck
Ok well after almost 12 hours of building somebody discovered the first gate by the swamp. They managed to breach all 3 metal behemoth gates to only be cut down by the 30 turrets we had placed in the cavern beyond it (frankly it's unfair inside the cave) with attacks coming from high and low coupled with the darkness we literally watched our would be raiders run around in a panic with their torches before being cut down along with 5 rexes a Giga and all 6 raiders. These caves are extremely unfair and we don't even have X plants up yet. The 6x damage modifier to structures doesn't even seem like a threat at this point as it will take us an hour to rebuild what we lost and our 2nd perimeter wasn't even reached.

Well the current build design we have is messy but genius. We basically placed fence foundations at random (but close) places and angles and built 1 to 3 high walls on em.in a random fashion to basically trip up dinos on follow or even ones with riders however our turrets are angled high and low and at varying angles as well so the walls rarely block more than half the turrets ever (which allows some ammo conservation) while slowing players and more importantly the dinos. Now beyond that we set up tripwire narcotic traps and IEDs in that lattice work of random walls as well as the occasional tripwire alarm (just to make people nervous) once you toss in the x plants to blind people it's just a death trap when you consider there are Megalosaurus and the turrets are set to players and tames only!
