Question about dossier

So I'm trying to figure out the dino dossier and notes thing. There's a few different types of unlocks I see, and I have no idea how any of them work.

1. Picture/name VS "?" = I see the 100 boxes for each dino, and some have the face of the dino, and it's name. It's like I unlock their picture/name.
I'm pretty sure this one is unlocked when I find the corresponding Helena note, does that sound right? Like I've tamed dinos, and they don't even show up in the dossiers at all, so I'm guessing you have to unlock them by finding the dossier first?

2. The lock under the picture = Some of the dossiers have a lock picture behind them, and others do not. The lock makes little sense to me though. I've never tamed an Iguanadon, and it doesn't have the lock, but I have tamed a megalodon, and it does have the lock. I haven't tamed a gigantosaurus and it has a lock, and I have tamed an akylo and it doesn't have the lock. So whether you've tamed it seems irrelevant to the lock.
Also, what does the lock even mean? I seem to get just as much info regardless of the lock. What's the point of it, and how do you have/remove the lock?
EDIT: I "thought" it would be whether you've got it on the current server/character or not, but I'm wrong. I had the argent with a lock, and I opened the box, and the lock went away (I know I had previous opened the box). BUT I just did the same thing with Helena #21, which I have a lock over. I got to the box, and it's already opened. I stood on it, nothing happened, it's still got a lock.

3. The top right circle = Seems like the little circle can be empty, have a checkmark, or not be there at all (like with the leech). I've heard that this means whether you've tamed the dino or not. This doesn't make sense though, because I've tamed a megalodon, but I don't have the checkmark.
Anyone able to confirm what the check actually means?

4. Additionally, how are these things calculated? It looks like all the dossiers I've unlocked stay available, regardless of the map, character, or server I'm on. Is it linked to my steam then? But the checkmarks seem to change with the character/map/server, not sure which.

5. Last thing. The "Master Zoologist" achievement. Is this calculated by having the checkmark next to each dino in the dossier? Or is the achievement calculated by some hidden variable? Or what?

3. I've discovered that the checkmark is dependent on server/character (not sure which though). Based on the game I'm in, the checkmarks change.
I've also found that the checkmark only pops up if you're nearby the tame when it happens. You probably need the prompt asking for you to input a name. I tamed a stego, but I wasn't close, and I don't have a check in the circle, but for dodo and ankylo I do (just tamed them on a new server). The

ok heres the thing with those circles: if it has a check in it, that means that creature for example a Dodo can be tamed where as something with no check in its circle like the Leech can not be tamed

and master zoologist from its description tells u that u need to tame everything thats tameable

Leech doesn't even have a circle at all. The check is definitely not showing that the dino is tameable, because I know the brontosaurus is tameable, because I've tamed one, and it doesn't have a check.
I'm guessing the check means you've tamed it, and maybe it's character specific? That's why I don't have a bronto check on this server maybe?
