Viking Bay 1/2/3 are pretty good starting areas, you´ve got all the mats you need at the beginning, tons of Dodos, Dillos, Pteras for taming, working animals like Anky, Doed, etc in walking distance, underwater at the bay you can farm pearls, oil and also black pearls.
Also, there are some nice rock foundations where you can build a starter base safe from the wild, at viking bay 2 there is a huge cave behind the waterfall where the skeleton is.

well im kind of looking for a good place in sp on ragnarok that i can build my perminate base on cause 1 was going to be the highlands (aka scottland) but gigas have an uncommon spawn there, but 1 was going to be in the tundra but even then i still have a hard time trying to pick out a good spot there

If you're looking for something scenic and defensible, the mountain jungle on the northwest of the island is very cool. By defensible I mean there are cliffs and caves to build around; it's infested with dangerous carnivores and troodons.

I've been playing Ragnarok map for a couple weeks now.

Its hard to choose what is the best location due to how diverse the map is, and it really boils down to what you want to do in Ark each, day.

Now, since you are doing SP, what's stopping you from building multiple bases all over the map?

I play with friends, and what I end up doing is usually making different bases for them once they choose a location, and in different styles for each.

oh u mean the ruinous jungle, yea that area is tempting but it is crawling with quite a hefty amount of predators

Another nice area is the west end of the gorge where it feeds into the ocean. Decent access to trees, rocks, metal, your sea critters, basically no predators. Oceanfront property, great views, local ordinance banning heavy speakers and dogs w/o leashes.

i get what u are saying man its just difficult for me to pick out where cause keep in mind this map is still incomplete with like 50% of it still not fully done

see it was easy for me to pick out my base when it came to the vanilla map, and i sill had a somewhat easy time picking 1 out for scorched earth but this map has been giving me trouble as to where to build so it could be easy to get my tames away from base should i need to go somewhere, and still be able to get back

Well, Ragnarok is going to give you problems then, since the central areas are pretty dangerous and, in fact, the top half of the map is split in half by a mountain range. Viking Bay is still your best bet for easy access to everything without too many carnivores other than the occasional alpha raptor (seen 3 in 5 days).

I can also plug the coastal area around the hot springs. Not too many carnivores out there and it's about as central as you can get without being surrounded by predators. I just think it looks boring so I never considered it; I'd rather fight tooth-and-nail to maintain a beautiful base.

I built my base in the rock canyon. On that one really high plateau with the rock bridge that connects to the cliff. One Behemoth gate secures the area from the cliff and it has multiple levels to build on. Completely safe. The area where the cliff is, is pretty safe. Terror birds are your biggest threat but easily taken care of. And you are right in the middle of ever area you could need to travel too. Good resources nearby and directly below is water access connecting to the sea.

I love building on some of the hot steam vents (when the volcano goes boom) It gives a nice buff and you can find ones that are close to the massive beaver dams for easy paste and close to lots of metal

On one server, I built in that same area, but down on the river. There's a little waterfall west of there with a lagoon that is a great spot without a lot of carnivores.

If you're looking for a Scottland base, there is a cave behind a waterfall, just find the two rivers and follow them untill you find it.
EDIT: here's a screenshot from inside the cave. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=960434706
