I've spent more time on the Island but it was a really nice change of pace when it came out.
the SE map is I think either the same size or a bit smaller than island, and has fewer different animals (no under water dinos, and a lot of the other island dinos missing)
for singleplayer or unofficial server I would prefer island, for official PvE server SE is simply better
there are also a lot of other things that are either unobtainable on SE or simply dont work there
additionally there are a lot of abitrary tedious boundries to make it harder, like generators on SE die after a bit and you are not allowed to place crop plots in the majority of the map area, because crops are banned from the badlands biom....
so:
map about the same
fps better on SE
less creatures
SE kinda more tedious than island
bigger? --> nope
more fps --> yes, you have better fps on all maps than on the island because the map maker of the island doesn't have an idea what he is doing...
more creatures? --> nope... some others than on the island, but less overall.
tedious? --> for me yes.. except the things which couldn't be found on the island
Overall? Do not play only 1 server... many servers are clustered together (you can travel from one to the other). Example servers --> [CH] Born2Frag - .....
But SE is definitely a "smaller" game. The map may be the same size (don't know) but there's less going on in it, fewer animals, fewer different kinds of areas, smaller and simpler caves, etc. It feels like what it is -- DLC. When it cost the same as the main game, that made little sense. Now that they're ballooning the main game's price to inexplicable, company-destroying prices, SE's price actually makes sense compared to the main game -- that is, they're both overpriced in about the same proportion.
While personally I love the astmosphere of scorched over the Island, it seems a more fitting landscape to the dinos stories I grew up with as apposed to lush almost tropical landscapes of the Island (I'm sure there was both in reality during the time).
It's definately not a bigger map and I personally feel it lacks somewhat in variation of creatures, there are also some (imo) that just dont fit the map , specifically the T-rex I think the Allosaurs fit the environment better as the top predator but again that's a personal thought.
I get on average the same fps on both using the same options although scorched seesm to be more fluid with less drops and feels like it performs better over all (probably due to the lack of water as it's under the entire map of The Island, I'm sure this contributes to the islands bad performance in certain areas.)
After sometime it can definately become tedious but so too does the island, Tooni's recommendation of playing on a cluster and travelling from time to time is a good recommendation.
Overall I personally prefer Scorched to The Island, if it's better or not is a personal opinion.
The difficulty has been toned down a bit since release but it is still for more experienced players and pretty much nowhere on the map is safe so you need to know how to handle wolves / terror birds / sabers / raptors early game which most new players don't. Then there is the weather on top of that. You are just going to die a lot.
The Island is also a more complete map, more dinos and better range of biomes. People that play SE ultimately return to their main base on The Island or The Center. There is no one on my old SE server that is still playing there as their main server.
With the release of the Ragnarok DLC, you have to question whether it is better to just play that map and get everything in 1 place which will happen when it is complete.
It just lacks grasslands.
I agree with Boomer... get it if its on sale.... just remember that Ragnarok will eventualy have All of SE's content ... possibly minus the weather effects (dont know). It already has wyverns.
but yea, if you want to have all the content of the DLC + all the content of the vanilla game, you probably want to look into ragnarok...
it even doesnt cost anything extra.... what makes SE dlc buyers regret the purchase...
think there was also some server option to make the fence passable so you can already visit the desert part of the ragnarok map....
problem with things like ragnarok and center - the mod maps which became official - is that they tend to be... well.... not polished.....
some bugs, some anoying holes, some graphic issues where the visual map doesnt add up to the physics (as in floor displayed lower than it is etc), and they often fail to keep up with updates....
for instance it took ages for center to get a redwood biom, after redwood was already released for island...
havent really spend much time with ragnarok map yet, but so far it looks ok, less annoyingly buggy than center
