How to tame an animal without killing it?

I bola'd a triceratops and I spent about 5 minutes shooting it with the slingshot, only to have it die on me instead of going unconscious. I'm brand new to the game so any tips would be great. Basically, how can I knock dinos out without killing them?

Aim for its head or use a club . Best ways is tranq arrow/dart if your able to get to them . Btw there is passive tames and hostile tames (a trike is a hostile tame) , with hostile tames you must collect its food and narcoberries or narcotics and remote use them every so often so watch its torpor bar (narcos increase torpor) . For a trike its favorite food is mejo berries but it can be tamed on amarr ,tinto or azul as well .

More time between shots and try to tame a higher level trike.

Maybe wait a bit in between every shot, the torpor still goes up for a few seconds after you shoot the stone, also try pulling back the slingshot as far as it goes for maximum torpor every shot

There is different torpor / damage on different tranq weapons. Also every second the torpor decrease so if you are too slow with causing torpor it might die (slingshot does very slow torpor, I would only recommend to use it against very low lvl dinos, I never bother making slingshots myself).

Use tranq arrows (lvl 21, you can craft rafts to quickly get lvls when you hit 15). First dino you should tame is most likely a trike, stego, ankylo or any other dino that can harvest berries since you need many of them for tranq arrows and to keep dinos tranqed if you play on official or low rate server.

First dino is best if it is as low lvl as possible to tame it fast and to use less narcoberries and use it to gather a bunch of material and tame a high lvl one.

Personally my first Dino was a lvl 12 trike that I tag teamed (both ppl had slingshots) so if you are still really wanting to gat a trike maybe just get a bud to ko it with you so that the torpedo goes up faster and it does not die

Like others have suggested give more time , maybe around 5-10 seconds between shots as torpor ramps up . After it falls down then its knocked out then you put food and narco berries in it

Another possiblity: if you've modified your game settings to mess with dino/player resistance/damage, you may have made it so they're dying before torpor gets high enough because they're too fragile. I have never accidentally killed a trike (and I have knocked them out with slingshots before), so I'm curious if there are other factors at play.

I also recommend getting the Dododex app on your smartphone, if you can; it will give you everything you need to know about taming a particular creature.

I would suggest trying to lv up for now by making walls and stuff and go for Tranq Arrows right away,they give decent exp for you to lv up fast and you will have spare buildings to make or walls.

I also had that trouble when i started the game (killing my dinos). You inflict more damage that Torpor because they are low lv and they die.

Your 2 solutions are these.

1)Use a Club and waste too much time in catching a low lv trike
2) Focus on leveling up and unlocking Tranq arrows and make your life a LOT easier and catch higher lv dinos easier.

u can also use the Jellyfish's biotoxin to keep a tame knocked out and its surprisingly stronger then narcotics

So how does torpor work? The higher it is the closer the dino is to becoming unconscious or is it the lower it is the closer they are to getting unconscious? Also, do I decrease or increase a dino's torpor by hitting it?

and easy way to teel is if they arent imobilized like say a trike and it turns to flee, thats a cue telling u that its close to being knocked out but taming creatures is made a lot easier once u have access to the longneck rifle and tranq darts
