how do you join older patch servers

You cant. However if the issue is with settings or certain changes with features, many servers use mods or changed settings to circumvent them.Classic flyers, classic mindwipe etc.

Just join. You should of specified if you were talking about major patches or minor ones. Private servers have the option to not update their server, unless forced/recommended to. Most patches are client fixes and not server fixes.

The decimals in the patch don't matter. Only the whole numbers matters. As long as you are all on the same whole number you can joing.

you can join as long as your on same major version number of server.. v258 client can join v258 server and such.. if you/client has v259 and server is still 258 you will not be able to join. prob wont even see server in browser. the minor versions (decimal after main branch) dont matter for joining servers (v258.35).
