Also what is up with unofficial servers not having any players? I only see the top player count being 26.
steam server browser does a better job of searching for servers, however you can't search by server name unfortunately.
go to the steam client: view -> servers
so that when you raid the enemy can't rebuild their entire army of dinos casually in 2 hours
you'll notice that on unofficials with high enough rates you'll run into a problem where even if you kill 20 rexes, they can get them all back by the next day and barely care, so wars tend to be completely endless unless you wipe them because there's no real cost to anything
there needs to be a balance of course, taking 3 hours for a weak low level tame is moronic, and nobody has 8 hours to tame a high level giga/squid/mosa/quetz, but at the same time if you can tame a 150 rex in an hour then the dinos have no cost nor any value
Official servers are simply proof of concept/demo servers. The majority of players of ark do not play on official servers.
Why? Simply put: mods.
At first this may not seem true but given how mod centric and mod supportive Wildcard is(think on the fact that 3 of the last 4 dlcs are formerly mods and 4k a month stipends are being paid to mod makers), it becomes pretty clear that mods drive this game.
Official servers do not use mods (until they make them "official"). Wildcard does -not- want the majority of players to be on official servers because they want(actually need) modded game play to help them find new mods to then convert to the game for the purposes of eventually in some way making a profit(mainly through incentivizing consumers by saying "look at all the game has to offer").
Also they need to have mod makers have a space with which to feel incentivized to make and have others use those mods. That only occurs on unoffiial and single player versions of the game.
The vast majority of Ark youtube videos(which also have translated to sales of the game due to pseudo word of mouth marketing) out there for ark also involve showing off modded game play. That's created a symbiosis that Wildcard also recognizes.
Thus all of that alone is extremely compelling evidence for purposefully having settings and aspects of official servers to discourage play there and encourage play via unofficial or sp iterations of the game.
Also, Official servers are an expense for the company that is only mitigated by dlc and new box sales. Pay to hosting services, player support etc all are labor and other costs that the company has to eat. So, encouraging people to play on unofficial servers(or just single player) helps them from needed to add to the costs of having new servers.
There is also now becoming an increasingly apparent shift to convert the game to console play prioritization(further shifting them away from pc official server priorities). This priority shift means that the less they have to bother with official servers, the better for them since they see consoles(sadly) becoming a more imporant revenue stream.
All in all there is no prestige in enduring on official servers, just the false perception to.
