Chainsaw: Weapon or only tool?

Is the chainsaw a better weapon than swords and pikes or is it mostly just useful for harvesting?I'm having trouble finding its DPS. Getting gasoline is super easy in scorched earth, so that's not the problem.

I m not entirely sure but the chainsaw should have higher dps than the sword, but its still a bad weapon because of the fast durability drain, the repair costs and the low hit range

I know it can harvests some things really well, but I've never used one to pay attention to what.

I think wood, organic polymer and maybe meat? I'm not sure about the last one. And yeah, it does drain durability real fast. Might be good for quickly doing a high danger area like a cave, if you have a backup weapon.

Also gathers pelts really great. If I am looking for pelts I take one up to the snow and kill a few mammoths.

all I know is.. that the chainsaw has to be swung at the target to be a weapon, though it does have a nice feature of gathering meat really fast from another player in PvP.

Definitely organic polymer and meat (especially mutton, from what I hear) at the very least.

Mindwipe to max dmg and come back when you killed that 150 giga in SECONDS with it from the back of a turtle and the chainsaw only went down 5-10% of dura.

Our tribe kills creatures with projectile weapons, then collects the meat, hide, chitin/keratin, etc. via chainsaw. There's about a 5X increase in yield vs. chopping up a dead animal with a hatchet or sword.

And yes, they're awesome at collecting wood and thatch from trees.
