Overclocking GPU with Msi Afterburner causes crash in game...
Hey guys,

Just wanted to know if any one has had this issue themselves and has figured out the problem.

I have a small overclock on my GTX980ti, Power Limit 130 / Temp Limit 91 (Priority) +100 Core clock and +385 memory speed. In game this gives me about 1517Mhz and about 3889Mhz Memory speed According to afterburner.

This overclock is stable, tested on Valley benchmark and works in other games just fine. However in ark, any overclock at all even adding +1 to core and memory will causes the game to crash...

So im wondering if anyone has had this issue and found a solution?

Running the latest drivers 381.65 and the latest MSI 4.3.0 with 6.6.0 Riva Statistics Tuner Server.

Running the game at High/Epic (shadows Medium), full resolution scale @1440p Windowed mode (crashes in fullscreen as well). no overclock I usually maintain about 57FPS on "average" with highs and lows in certain area's as most people know, I just want to get that extra boost as this GPU has been really reliable on OC's.

Cheers guys.

Hmm do you have a good PSU? Just makes me wonder if you've had it crash on both cards when they were overclocked.... though you did say it was stable in everything else so maybe it's just the game I guess.
Yea it is stable, PSU is old but its been super reliable, 850w 80+Gold Antec True Power Quattro from 2007, still going strong with no issues. and the overclock works in other games, its odd.
Ya your PSU should be fine... I hope you're able to figure it out! :)

While the model itself doesn't worry me, the age does. Electrical components do degrade over time, contrary to what some people think, and it's possible the power delivery and filtering isn't as stable as what it was new. Up until recently I had a PC Power & Cooling unit, which was THE gold standard back in the day for psu's, but was degraded to the point of significantly decreased efficiency (as in increased power draw measured at the wall to feed the components, quick math gave me around 60% efficiency),and even without major issues, I felt it was time to refresh it. Still lasted 11 years, which is way more than most psu's can achieve.

Thats what im saying, Its still hitting effeicieny at around 75% (not 80% like it should so it shows some degredation), I've done the power measurements as i too thought it was time to change after 10 years. Which is why I am so suprised!

However, I Leave my PC's on pretty much constant, (no evidence here just understanding of physics from an engineering stand point and some of electrical components) So I'd like to think that instead of going cold to hot and hot to cold in the process of turning it off and on multiple times over the course of years (10 years in the case of the PSU) A constant temp might of kept the components in much better condition.

Or i just got an awesome bargain and the PSU is magical lol.

Powerlimit of 130 is way to high for your overclocking.
I had a GTX 980ti OC (MSI Gaming) too and it worked fine with ARK.

Power Limit 110 (default BIOS)
Temp Limit 91
+ 100 Core clock
+ 400 Memory clock

This works for me.

Additionally you can try to lower your settings in ARK. I played on mixed Medium/High with this card on a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

Use 3D Mark Firestrike to test your overclocking. This tool always crashed my driver when the overclocking was to high.

Well mine was always religiously turned off at night. That could have contributed to the accelerated degrading of my psu over yours, although I've never seen actual physical proof of constant load > load spikes, only hearsay.

I agree with you, I havent seen much evidence other than My own PSU to say whether Always on is better or turning off when not used is better.... I just use my PC alot and as a media server so its always left on lol.

Power Limit and Temp Limit are Linked, I prefer it that way. So having the limit that high would not effect it as the power limit doesnt make it exceed power use, but does allow it to consume more power IF it needs to. Temp Limit is set as the priority.

Yea ive used Firestrike at 4k with my overclock and never had an issue, Ive been doing some testing and it seems to be the memory clock for some reason...i dunno why but going over +200 on memory crashes ark, but not any other game :/ If i can play Ark at my normal Current settings at 1440p, Theres no reason why i should have to lower the settings with an overclock.... lol

Might be putting View Distance back up to Epic lol

Thanks for all the help though <- Everyone :) Its nice to see some positivity and good help from this community rather than the usual stuff xD

Yes power and temp limit is linked...but anyway I had crashes too when i gone over 110 power limit.
Try to lower it to 110 and test it again. You can't loose anything :)
You will see that your card is still able to hold the max boost speed. For the OC values you've set, you do not need 130 %.

And regarding your settings. It seems like you haven't built and tamed a lot :)
You can run this settings when there are no big buildings and many dinos...but forget it when you have some :)

With my Mid/High mixed settings on 1080p, i get 70-90 fps in the wild.... but only 8 fps in my big base.

So the more you build and tame, there more you will have to go down with the settings. A 980ti isn't able to handle 1440p on High/Epic when you really play the game and build and tame :)

Aaand.... i bought a 1080 ti OC (MSI) ... and I'm reaching 15 fps now in my big base.
So NO gpu out there is able to handle ARK if its really played for 100s of hours :)

If you only play SOTF and things like that, then it runs fine :)

You say I havent built or tamed alot....look at my screenshots and say otherwise :)

I know ark is going to kill it, I remember last year having to run the game on 1080p at those settings in order to maintain FPS, But so far I dont need to lower it. We are not after Hundred's of dinos and not after a super massive base, you can see on my latest screenshots and the size of my previous bases...I've built a lot, built so much it took literally minutes for the abse to load in.

I'm not trying to be condscending, but Ark performance has much improved since the last time i Played it and ive not got as much hours as some people, but 1k hours is still a hell of a lot for a single game. Unfortunately for meI have a job, a kid and other ♥♥♥♥ to do...lol

I will take your advace though and unlink Power and Temp and try running with 110.
