How to get ARK DevKit
I feel like I've been posting too many discussions lately, but I need a very simple answer here. Im thinking about downloading the DevKit because I'm used to modding games and I have decent programming skills. I want to make some mods that I haven't seen on the workshop yet.. Anyeay, back to the point, how the heck do I get it? Every video I watched seems to be extremely outdated and all the forums I see seem too complicated...

So I can't get the kit thru steam anymore? Then how do I get it? Through the Epic Games website? Also, what is the approximate file size? My internet is quite slow and if the file size is over say 10GB then I'll just download it on my laptop not my PC.

Thanks in advance.

You go through Epic to get the launcher, and through that it will have an option to download the Dev Kit.

oh btw.... it's like 80-90GB total <-- no joke

And you need a crazy powerful computer and patience.

Holy crap.. gosh.. I'm used to Dev kits having like 40mb lol. My laptop probably isn't powerful enough then. My PC should be, but man I dont feel like downloading all that.. I have a 2TB HDD but my SSD is only 250GB and I should probably put it on that huh.. well I dont think it's worth it then..

I was only gonna make a couple mods to fix things that bother me in ARK, like the fact that poison grenades and smoke grenades have no purpose in SP or PvE, I was gonna make poison grenades work like narcotic traps on dinos, and make smoke grenades slow dinos by like 15% to give them a SP use, but 90GB for that? Not worth it lol.

Well if you do decide, here is the link on download directions.

But yea you get essentially the uncompressed containers, and the stuff that most ppl never see. Up-coming dinos, etc. Usually ppl will download it and post what they find on Youtube.

Ok thanks. I'm just wondering why the kit has all the game files. Shouldn't it just run off of the game files in the ARK directory?

I think it's because of Steam and the way it requires games to be packed. So you have to have a completely different download of the game files.

My Epic Games folder weights more than 200GB. And I don't have a lot of items. Only a couple of mods. Best to run this is install in a SSD, lot of RAM at high Hz and 8 core CPU. Ark Dev Kit is a nightmare.

Hmm well i guess it cant hurt to try it. I can always delete it if i need to. But the thing thats gonna hurt is the download time.. it takes me like 1 hour to download 1GB lol.. im not in an urban area.

Me too, areas like mine that is not urban have a bad connection. I'm updating right now the Ark Dev Kit. 3.7 GB, 2 hours.

Well I cant say much because I dont have it yet but I would only be making a couple simple mods that would probably take me like 1 hour to make max.. I dont think it should be TOO bad.. but what do you need such a good PC for? Is it the compiling of the mod or just the actual editing and stuff? Im not gonna be making whole maps and stuff im too lazy to do that. I literally want to edit the item info of poison grenades and smoke grenades, thats about it.. i wouldnt even need any rendering.

because you can mod ark while not even owning ark. if you require the gamefiles first not everybody would be able to create mods

Well imo, why would you want to mod a game that you dont even own? (other than the fact that ark is now offering very large amounts of money for mods) But if its such a problem then cant they just make two downloads? Idk ..

Well. Be in mind the way this engine works. I.E. The first time you launch it, can take hours and hours to complile the shaders. This only happend once, but if you make any change in some thing that you don't know (like i do many tiimes) the engine re-compile all shaders again. Hours and hours the PC with the CPU at 100%. (This can be edited in BaseEngine.ini) but the first time is mandatory.

To edit simply things like you say, is not too bad. Just donwload and start the engine in a low specs pc can turn in a nightmare.

because ark is using unreal engine 4 and most likely the unreal engine devs demand to give anybody access to the devkit. remember that you can't just use a game engine your company hasn't designed by their own without agreeing on some terms and conditions

Yea.. but whatever not really concerned about that. Concerned about how long its going to take me to download and how unoptimized the kit appears to be according to your responses. I think ill just ask my friend to use his computer, i think he already has the devkit.
