As of right now myself and 99% of my friends wouldn't recommend it.
Definitely does need a decent rig but 16 isn't the minimum Ofc c: My desktop only has 8gb ram and it's fine with it. Can't go epic but everything else works.
The game essentially is very fun and addicting. Although play it too much at once it's often that you'll get burnt out and have to take a break. Everyone above is right about most of the negative comments now more relate to the most recent patch, but if you're new to the game, I don't believe it'll effect you as much because you won't be used to how things used to be. At the moment, it really depends on what you deem as "worth it". A game that updates often and has a lot of content to explore? Then sure it is definitely worth it.
In all honesty I've loved this since the beginning and I still love it now, the latest patch seems to be deterring a lot of people from the game but it isn't stuff that's set in stone and isn't the only aspect inside the game. So I wouldn't let the last patch solely be your deciding factor if you get it or not.
For $30 you can get hours of fun and entertainment but I personally always wait for sales with any games c:
Do be sure that your PC is up to the task.
ARK has been consistantly popular. I cannot recall a day that ARK wasn't in the top 8 for amount of Steam players playing. Often in the top 5. It is quite common for players to have spent thousands of hours in the game and have multiple accounts.
Sadly with popularity comes alot of toxic drama. I'm glad you are reading the reviews and not just looking at them. You are correct when you state they are not helpful. This is because instead of any actual analysis pertaining to facts, we are being exposed to statements of a more emotional nature.
Strangely, many of the nay-sayers have played ARK for thousands of hours and still play ARK even while complaining and giving negative viewpoints. There is much more to say on this subject but i think you would rather hear about the game itself rather than the politics surrounding it.
I'm not sure if this helps but this is the review I gave:
Ignore the Drama, Buy the Game - you won't be sorry. It's a bargain at regular price and an absolute steal on sale.
Your biggest challange will be to find the game playstyle you prefer. Solo, Friends Only, Small Groups, PVE, PVP. Hardcore (rogue-like), Non-Hardcore (most popular), Less Grindy, More Grindy, With strangers, Without Strangers, etc ...
ARK is EXTREMELY customizable - Including random map building. Mods can be added as well. There will be a learning curve with doing certain things. Solo players and Server Hosts will have full control over the parameters and can make the game whatever they want it to focus on... building sim, exploration, tamers paradise, all the above, and so much more. You name it. Yes, the Host can play a God if they wanted to.
Hits the nail on the head.
I have only 100 hours in this game and have barely scratched the surface.
Agreed. The wiki is your friend :) Here is the link: http://ark.gamepedia.com/ARK_Survival_Evolved_Wiki
I've been playing ARK since the beginning. i can remember at least 4 or 5 waves of negativity on ARK over almost two years now since its release.
All of them saying the same thing "My tame is useless after the rebalance!" Over time players adapted to each rebalance and the negative feelings disappated.
On this latest rebalance patch:
I tested a low level ptera with only 744 stamina yesterday. I flew it from the bottom SW tip of the island all the way to the volcano. It took longer to get there and I had to make some resting stops along the way but I felt no real risk or problems getting there. I even fought with the ptera and found it still able to fight.
I did not see any evidence backing up the claims that "pteras are useless now". I would still use a ptera for traveling long distances.
Flyers take a bit more patience now but they are still useful. Because official server maps are all linked I consider PVP all one big world and PVE another. Due to the flyer nerf now these two worlds have just gotten bigger.
For the PVP world: A group of 10 - 20 server invaders will find it a bit more difficult to "sneak in" to a server late at night and wipe it out while the residents are offline. Combine this with the PVE rebalance on resource gathering (no more overloading the anky on a quetz.) and I think pvp will begin to see more drawn out wars and less "I blitzed you while you were sleeping".
okay, my laptop has i5 6200u, gtx 950m 2 gig ddr5(i can overclock it close to 960m if neccesary) and 8 gig of ram, can it run the game? I have a desktop too with fx 8350 and r9 380 but it's back in my parent's house while I'm at college dorm. Both system have Linux Mint installed. Can they run the game?
