Compared to Intel. Nvidia or AMD is usually better than anything Intel has.. Yes it won't be much. But you're using better memory on the graphics card and normally better overall performance vs Intel..
but again the game is VERY poorly optimized right now and Mac we're once known as gaming systems. That quickly changed in late 90's and they never looked back or have invested the time/effort or money into their gaming side or with Opengl...
Even Dev's from Wildcard have fully admit that Mac and Linux OpenGL vs Directx of ark is like night and day.. Currently OpenGl version for mac/Linux is far behind windows version. With game already poorly optimized.. It doesn't help much either..
Which is why many us gamers we're hoping that Vulkan API would fix this and bring better performance no matter what OS/system you're playing on.. But apple apparently Left (not fully sure) the group with Vulkan and have decided write there own Metal API.. So who knows how well that will work for apple/Mac users and gamers..
If his mac does have dedicated Gpu.. It's worth looking into. Maybe all he has to do is download Nvidia drivers..
But yes Granted.. Booting on MBP with windows and Nvidia drivers may help a bit..
Mac version of ark prob won't benefit much with Nvidia.. But dual booted to windows may.
it be upto OP to decide if they wish try or not if they have MBP I think they have..
here watch this.,. Give bit info..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBq18kpPVSQ
if you have MBP I think you do.. Should have both intel and Nvidia GPU.
I know they sold bunch MBP 15 inch with both I5 and i7 system. As said I almost bought one
at Best buy back end 2014.. but end up buying asus laptop with crapy AMD gpu lol..
but let us know.. Good luck :)
can you get the model # please? I can find the full spec on it.. thanks (hopefully)
but ya check out the video I link.. it very true. Cuz I remember back in 90's mac had a lot games. My highschool use have me del mac games in our old mac color classic computer lab lol.
EDIT: it might be this MacBookPro11,1
Ya that it.. I remember them.. Was looking both the 13' and 15' at the time for collage I think..
I remember some 15' models had Nvidia GPU in them.
but ya sorry say. No Nvidia gpu for you :(
There is another option and few company are making them out there but you'll never get the full performace out the external GPU using USB.. Thunderbolt maybe give bit better performance
when hooked up with external GPU but its still kinda very beta.. Prob not even supported for mac yet.. Windows yes but there are still issues
You can buy desktop GPU and hook up to any windows laptop and have that graphics card
run your game, But Jay2cent and Linus have done some benchmarks with GTX 1060 and 1080 and they not great but at least playable.
http://www.notebookreview.com/howto/how-to-upgrade-your-notebook-with-an-external-graphics-card/
this bit old and I'm sure it gotten bit better but the question almost comes down too
1) is worth spend all this for external GPU and buying Desktop GPU??
2) just buy better gaming laptop? or build gaming PC?
right now 2 is still better option. But maybe very near future it could be better option as it gets better but I'd say still awhile off..
MBP is great for school and collage, but ya. You can build game pc/tower prety cheap now days. Save up 600-700$ and you can walk into almost any computer store that has parts and they can build you something or can buy parts online if have somebody who knows how build PCs. It will help if you already have a monitor and keyboard already. You'll be set.
But good luck :)
But for me my old GTX 670 FTW struggled play it almost 2 yrs ago. And I save up for my GTX 980ti SC and still run like crap lol. It is better but still not smooth 60 FPS on high.
I'm sure in 1 or 2 yrs ark will hopefully run better on both pc and Mac/Linux.
