ARK: What age is it appropriate for?
Hey all,
I have some questions about ARK. It's something I'm considering getting at some point, but I want to know if it's appropriate for my YouTube channel. I advertise the channel as a PG channel, and much of my audience is 7-10 year olds. As such, I have some questions...

1. Can blood be disabled? I believe I've heard this is possible, but I'm not positive...
2. When playing singleplayer, can you adjust taming rates, config options, etc.? I would be playing the game offline by myself, but I know the taming can take a LONG time and I'm wondering if there's a way to shorten it in singleplayer for practicality's sake.
3. I have some concerns about the modesty of the female character. Does she show any cleavage or midriff? If so, is there a way to disable this and give her a more modest outfit?

Thank you!

Paulsoaresjr is another PG YouTuber who is pretty big. He played ARK as well, though he's pretty PG with most, he'll throw a joke in or two meant for an older audience. I, myself a 21 year old, do enjoy his ARK playthrough and can understand. Honestly, PG can be skewered up by parents though. Is blood okay? Is killing a dinosaur okay, even if in a digital world? Parents make their children's decisions in what PG is to the parent, not the child. So no matter what, a parent won't let a kid watch your channel no matter the PG content if it has blood, killing, or any such thing. It's just how protective is the parent. I remember playing Toy Soldiers, the green army men game and killing green soldiers. I can't recall too vividly, but I want to say there was blood on the game. But I grew up just fine. Played all the GTA games and all. It's just the parents being too strict or harsh and sheltering usually on content. I mean...listen to this...if you get a cut and start to bleed as a child, what's the difference between that blood and the blood pool on a game (no body or anything, just a pool)? When I have a kid, they'll be free to watch almost anything. Almost. Sheltering a kid too hard can have adverse effects. Very adverse in some cases.

It's aiming for a Teen rating from the ESRB. I don't know what the other rating boards will give it, but a T rating is a good idea where it will be

I wouldn't say this is a child friendly game personally. I mean I know it's Dinosaurs and kids go nuts for them, but there is a lot of violence and potential for a lot of anger(some of the bugs are seriously infuriating).

I mean if you're just going to ride around on Dinosaurs and make it kind of educational, like you start telling facts about the Dinosaur(s) that you are riding/taming etc, that would be kinda cool. Although the game is inaccurate in terms of size(and other very difficult to code stuff which can be forgiven).

As long as you stay away from the weapons side of things and keep it focused on the Dinosaurs you should be OK, but the game its self is much, much more than that.

One question, would you do youtube videos of H1Z1 or other survival based games for kids? As the one thing they all have in common, is violence.

Theres no burqas in ARK unfortunetly the closest thing is a good flak set for the female. Get her covered up real good.
Just don't use the realism mod

Ah, thank you guys all for your feedback. You've given me quite a good idea of what to expect now.
In regards to those asking about the channel-- the general subject matter of the channel is animals/wildlife. ARK does fit this theme-- we'd most likely be focused on taming more than fighting, though I'm sure we'd have to fend off attacks at times as well. But that's nothing my community isn't used to-- quite a few of the games we play involve animals hunting and killing for survival's sake, so I'm not too concerned about that. My concerns, as I stated would be unnecessary/excessive violence and immodesty, but it seems like there are workarounds for that, which is good. Thank you all for your input!

And if you're going to play as a female, you should probably never leave your Ark house. It's not appropriate for a woman to battle a dinosaur.

But good news--farming and cooking do exist, so you can keep your female character busy with household chores.

If you join an official server (unofficials are better), maintain peaceful relations with the alpha tribe.

I let my 7 and 10 yo play. They enjoy it and it's clean, I don't even turn anything off. Seems often in school they know names and some dinos that others don't, so I believe it helps in that aspect..

Same, though I setup a server for my son and I to play on. The game is fine, the people that tend to play it not so much lol

Just a word of warning: utahraptors can and probably will cause more than a few jump scares. They're fast, have a long sight range, and you don't always see them in time.

Ah, okay-- I'm not a big PvP person as it is, haha, I'd probably mostly play local :P
Oh goodness, thanks for warning me about the Utahraptors... I startle easily lol
