Cant harvest sand on SE

So late yesterday evening I was smashing rocks on my rock elemental and all of a sudden I stopped harvesting sand, only stone. I checked his weight and mine, nowhere near encumbered. I tried using a doedicurus and a pickaxe/hatchet and picking up stones from the ground, but I'm not getting any sand whatsoever, help!

Are you hitting the rocks that are the same color as the elemental in rock form?

no not at all, just regular rocks

Nevermind, I found a fix, just needed to smack more yellow rocks... never realised you need to hit certain rocks to farm sand... never happened before
