Any ways to lower a dedicated server ram usage?
I'm going to be running an Survival Evolved server (with mods but I'm not worrying about that yet) for a few friends of mine.

When idling (without mods) it is using about 6GB of ram which is crazy! And I fear that having people on it will only increase the usage.

Anyhoo, does anyone know of any ways to force the server to use less ram, without having to create a virtual machine with only 6-7GB of ram, so it CANT use more.

Any help would be appreciated. Also it would be good to hear from the developers about the issue. As no game server I have ever encounters has used this much. I've seen a Minecraft server run 500 people on 2GB of ram., it's really not a comparison tbh, but I've seen it.

My main server is a Linux OS, with 16GB DDR3 ram and a decent CPU. I need at least 12 GB free for other stuff, but I feel like that is not going to happen if I cannot sort out this ram issue.

The game using 6GB+ on a system using 8GB+ is normal, so 6GB on a server may be normal as well.

And you cant compare minecraft to ARK bruh

I only play Singleplayer, until they fix their game.

20,000 private servers says you're wrong.
30,000+ negative reviews seem to say you're wrong..
Every single server i have ever joined was horrible.
Most agree online is pretty broken at this point. I've given up, I just play single player for abit the uninstall because file size balloons like crazy for no reason.

I'm running a dedicated, 2 mods (corpse and pet finder) with 5-7 people on at a time.. Guess what, it's using 2gig ram right now with only 1 person though. It's never crashed, there's no lag, runs perfectly.. So perhaps it's a mod or how many people you have on? Seriously though RAM is dirt cheap get some more...

show me the 30000 reviews that say online is broken.
And just because you had a bad experience doesnt mean everyone else has.
And if you are having to many bad experiences then maybe the issue is you :)

Like I said, this is a server with no players and no mods. Ram is cheap yes, however having a hosted dedicated box is not, and ram is expensive in hosting.

Is it your mods or something? Seriously I am playing on my dedicated right now and it hasn't gone over 2gb usage...

Lol 2gb of your what 4? Games like ARK - Not ment for Unreal Engine btw tend to take 50% mem period. The other half for the OS.

Mixed reviews on the storepage, read them yourself its a generally accepted fact the servers are crap. Singleplayer works fine, the servers are garbage especially the offical. Optimization is nonexistant aswell. Just read the negative reviews lol dont be such a blind fanboy.

It has been my experience that most negative reviews are posted by ignorant angry dumbazes that expected a fully polished and de-bugged game knowing they are buying an Early Access game. There are also a lot of angry posts from people that were made about a completely voluntary paid DLC in early access (That you did not even need to buy to use all the new stuff).

And you have to admint, people are more often willing to take the extra time to post something negative than to take the time to post what they liked. It is human nature. And with over 100k people playing the game, 30k that may or may not still be playing (because let's face it, at least some of that 30k people may complain, but I bet they are still playing), That tells me more people are enjoying it than not.

This game has been in EA for years now, and performance wise its the same. Enjoyment wise, the games fine. Needs polishing but itsfun. The fact is to enjoy the game it has to be on singleplayer or youll have to deal with rubber banding, lag and almost unplayablility.
People knock the dlc because it just shows greed. That simple.
Alot of the negative reviews are from people with 1000+ hours lol. The games fun but its accepted the issues are dragging it down into EA hell where it may remain forever at this rate. Also the min requirements lie, heavily. I waited years to buy this game, because infigured in a few years it should be playable. Luckily got it on sale so im just having it get dust in my library and maybe ill try it when its done in another 3 years.

Performance has gone up massively since its release date

You can force the server to run with sky effects off, that may help.
