How to choose characters?

I started a new char on a server that I already had a char on. How do I switch back to my old char? Everytime I log into the server it just automatically loads new char and I can't find an option to change characters.

Are you saying you are sent to the "create a new character" screen? If so, you might try to click on Download existing Survivor button on the bottom right of that screen. If your old character is in there, it's name will appear at the top of the screen. You click on the name, and then click the "download survivor" button on the bottom left. This is what usually happens when you have uploaded your survivor to an obelisk inventory. Another thing to consider is that you need to be for sure that you have played on that server before. If you have, and you just logged off last time you were on it, then I really don't think my advise above will work.

Yeah I've played on the server. I have two chars on the server, but everytime I log into the server it automatically loads the new char. Can't find option to load the old char that is on the same server as the new one. Two chars on same server.

There is no switching between characters. You can only have 1 survivor per server. If you make a new one, it replaces the old.

As far as I know, you can't if you dont have access to the character profile ini's on the server. So if you made a character after you already had one, your old character is lost. Only way to get it back would be to have the admin shut off the server and edit the character profile ini to remove your current character. Even then it is not 100% and an unholy pain in the ass for the admin. ARK is not really designed for multiple characters on one server.

Ahhh... I see. What puzzles me, is how you were able to create a second player on the same server. Did you use two different steam accounts? Is this an official or unofficial server?

Considering how hard it is/impossible to switch chars, they should NOT make it so easy to create a new one or at least give many warnings first that the old char is being replaced.

To answer your question, when you die and are choosing spawn location there's a button that says create new survivor. I clicked and created new survivor. So lame.

If this is on an official server, you need to go here: https://support.survivetheark.com/hc/en-us and create an account, and then submit a support ticket. That is the only way on an official server. If you are on an unofficial server, try contacting the admin of the server and see if they can help you.

You know once upon a time there was just a game that you bought and you played. No one told them how to play, there was maybe a booklet that explained the basics. You had to work it out yourself. When things went wrong, no one blamed the game, they just got on with it.

You lost a character. It's a learning curve. Move on. You will restart many times playing ark.

In fairness, they don't provide manuals anymore and nor did we have MMO's when manuals did exist.

Players almost need to predict the consequences. Just look at the poor guy who created a tribe after playing alone. Loses the lot because there's no warning.

I completely agree with this. It would be nice if they did not give the option to "create a new survivor" on the page that comes up to re-spawn after death. Or, at least give a huge warning as they do when you upload a character or dino to the obelisk.

You can only have one character per server, so if you started a new character im sorry, but you have lost it.

Once upon a time? You mean back when you bought a complete game and didn't have to spend tons of money on DLC later on? You mean back when manuals DID actually come with games unlike they do now? You mean back before many games had in game purchases and money traps to fk ppl over? You mean back before Devs could just keep a game in "Early Release" using that as an excuse for years to rake in money while having fked game mechanics?

Yes I miss those once upon a time gaming days.

the same thing happened to me, where i joined my save file (which still existed!) on a new character for some reason. My base, dinos, and my sleeping body were all still there, but i don't know how to get back on that account. i tried downloading an old character, but nothing was there

better to necro imo. many threads with same information isn't as good. better one thread with all info. more complete that way anyway
