So long as you have some bolas, raptors are easy tames.
If it's level 30, you need 30 raw meat, 12 narco berries (or 3 narcotic), and they'll take you either 21 slingshot hits, or 6 tranq arrows.
However the tricky thing with predators is that you can't exactly check their level until you've already started the taming process.

Thanks, appreciate the info. I have only a slingshot, not bolas, but I have ability to craft those. And have lots of resources. I'm on a island, or really long peninsula actually, on a hilltop with a lot of resources. Thanks for the link also, will check it out.
Thanks! I have the plans to craft one. What I was afraid of was getting to close to him!
I'm gonna give it a go after I craft the spyglass and check his level, if it's not too high. At best I die and spawn back in my bed and will know where my body is at. Can raptors swim well?
At level 15, prioritize making a raft and you can use that to make a getaway on the water if needed. When you are looking to kill rather than tame, this also becomes a great early way to take on raptors, carnos, and even alphas if you are quick enough.
Heh, you're right. I had the points to get the plans, but don't have any crystal. Guess I'll have to wing it for now.
Interestingly, there's not much in that water at the head of the bay there. So I think I'll be ok.
