Your out with a tame and die out of render distance from your base, or leave a tame away from base for 3 days and the "Dog Catcher" comes out and impounds your tame and takes it back to "The Pound". You can retrieve it from the pound... for a small fee.
Or a large fee.
There is already a mod called Homing Pigeon which flies your bird back to a flag if you die in the wilds. It apparently only works for birds. Don't know the particulars as I've never used it.
Despite the necroing by the other person pointlessly, a better mod for finding lost dinos is the dino tracker mod. Alternatively the Awesome Teleporters mod also has a feature that allows you to attach trackers to all dinos and then teleport them to you if lost.
