What are these "Cross Ark servers" I see when server browsing official servers?

I've googled it and they don't directly say what it is for but it leads to sayign that cross play between PS4 and steam, and Xbox one and Windows 10 store Ark will be able to play together, but then again I'm getting mixed comments saying that oh that's not possible and the other end saying that it is true and this is actually happening. I just want to ask 2 questions,1) Is Cross-play actually happening? 2) (if question leads to the answer "no" (and feel free to answer both questions)) What makes CrossArk servers different from official servers?

Cross Ark servers are servers that are clustered so that players can play on the island/scorched earth and the center with the same charactor by uploading from one server and downloading on the other. This allows a player to take the charactor, items and dino's to any of the servers in the cluster so that they don't have to start over when they get there.

for your second question, I can't speak for PS4 as such but It was my understanding from what wildcard said a while back that the steam version will never be compatable with the console version and that was why they were making a windows store version, this could have changed, I don't have a PS4 so I have not been watching the development there.

For XBOX one, ark is part of the "Play anywhere" program, so once the game releases and Wildcard & Microsoft get the Windows store version ready anyone with the Xbox one version will automatically own the Windows 10 version. (info for this is available from microsoft) but W10/XB1 will not be able to play with the steam version.

I would have to do more research to check on the PS4-steam versions, I have not found anything reliable so far but perhaps some one else can direct you to some reliable info for that console.

I don’t think it’s a compatibility issue so much as it is a “who gets the money” one. Microsoft just has a platform that will cater to cross play so long as it’s through their ecosystem. Sony just has psn.

Not sure why it’s acceptable for rocket league and not others but... (shrugs)

I personally like the cost of entry for the pc world anyway... enable crossplay and the squeaker army shall follow. Especially as we near the holidays.

I sort of like the idea of cross play because my son has both XBOX and PC version of Ark.. he prefers to play from his XBOX so this would be an opportunity to get him to play ARK with me more than what he currently does.. but.. on the other hand.. our servers are crowded already with just PC players.. will this allow them to come build and play on our PC servers, hence over saturate them even more then they currently are?? Sorry in advance.. I just don't have a complete grasp of this whole cross play thing yet.. guess I am too old school :-) (and yes, I contradict myself in the post when I say I like the idea but actually don't have a great understanding of what cross play is, so please don't bite off my head:-) )

I'm sorry but the answer first given is wrong, Cross-Ark servers are not just clustered servers. They can also be single servers like what I'm helping my friend run. They require at the moment that you own Ark on win10 or XBONE to play on them. PS4 is NOT joining the Cross-Ark race because PSN does not want to have another vulnerability added to it.

Your pointless necroing aside, you're confusing the already understood and accepted terminology of Cross-Ark with Cross Platform.

Cluster Servers are linked so you can upload creatures and download them to other Maps on the Cluster you can also use the one character across all the maps. Character Transfer and dino upload/download is allowed or you could have a character on each server/map its up to you. Note the items that are on you will teleport with you to other server but dinos must be uploaded then downloaded on the server you want to play on. there is a time limit for downloading tamed dinos also dinos must have nothing on them when uploading as they drop everything! when uploaded. Use any Orbelisk or Orbelisk loot drop to move around the servers on the cluster or use a tek transmitter. sea tames must be uploaded/downloaded from sea loot drops.
Note: Aberration map only allows uploading to cluster maps no downloading dinos to from other cluster maps to aberration. but i think you can use a tek transmitter to bring dinos over from the island etc...
