once the res has water in it, it will go out thru the connected pipes and to the faucet to water your plants.. but you need to constantly keep it filled for it to work.. wether that is filled by rain or hauling skins of water to it ....
do you have water on the map nearby? like a lake or river?
you dont actually need water reservoirs at all:
place an "Irrigation Pipe" at water, than snap normal pipes onto it untill you reach your crop farm
"water taps" on pipes are like feeding throughs for plants, just with a very very small radius
so you need to place them very close to the crop plot
the water reservoir is for the case that you dont have natural water supplies nearby, it ll fill itself with rain...
a water pipe-system connected to a lake with Irrigation pipe can supply you and your crops with infinite water
a water pipe system only connected to reservoirs can only store as much water as the reservoirs can, so it can run out if it doesnt rain for a while or if you use a lot for cooking and plants!
btw since you seem new to the crop farming:
you ll need something to fertilize your plants aswell, dino feces are an easy way to do so... you could also visit a cave and tame a beetle (taming one is super fast but you ll need some feces to do so)
beetles produse fertilizer out of feces, so they are very usefull
there is also the way of produsing fertilizer with compost bin, but it takes forever and is a waste of thatch
