For me I haven't played in over a year as I am waiting for AI pathfinding fixes that will enable me to roam the island with a small pack of defensive dinos. As it stands they get stuck on everything and you end up spending more time babysitting the dinos than you do moving around. If you want a more polished experience in offline solo I suggest waiting for a bit longer.
For me, the best part of the single player experience is making your own goals and story as you explore the chosen map. You and your tames vs the harsh unexplored world, has its own rewards.
I do find PvE with fellow tribe mates the most fun however, setting common goals with a larger pool of resources and engrams.
Unlike some players who set alarms for the middle of the night so they can imprint.
