Very good point! lol. I forgot the most important part.
I may have to install the game soon so I can be a better help for him and maybe start a local co-op with him, I guess this would be a good way for him to learn the basics of this game :)
It's a shame that such an unforgiving, but interesting game doesn't have a tutorial that teach you the basics of the UI before leaving you on your own.
as mentioned above you have to 'learn' new items in the Engram Tab but you have atleast one item by default (maybe more) the pick so just mouse over and press E
edit: double click is ok but if your crafting from a bp and have a storage open it will 'transfer' the bp not craft it. so "E" or right click is better to use
