How do I craft?

My 10 year old son has gotten this game a few days ago, so have I but havent had time to install it yet, but he is about to give up, he still hasn't found out how to craft a basic item.
He already has gathered the items needed for a pick and an axe, but he doesn't know what key to press or how the crafting works.
We have even tried searching for guides, but they always show some old version of the game and never show exactly how to do it.
Any help will be much appreciated :)

the letter 'v' opens your crafting menu. Once basic items are crafted, a good portion of crafting is moved into other objects - smithy, fabricator, off the top of my head.

the crafting menu can also be found alongside your inventory menu if you press 'i'. You'll see inventory on one tab, clicking on the tab that says crafting will get you to the same place the 'v' does.

before crafting you also need to learn the engram to craft that item, learn engrams by going to your inventory, (default key 'i') and click on the engrams icon at the top of the center panel.

The "v" button on the keyboard should bring up the crafting menu. You can also press "i" to look at your inventory. You'll only have 3 things you can craft at first, but you can level up and get emgrams to make other things. To craft something, you'll need the resources, then you double click the thing you want to craft. Many but not all clickable buttons need you to double click. All of the clickable buttons for level ups and emgrams are on the same menu that the "v" and "i" buttons take you to. I hope I helped. :)

Thank you very much everyone, it was the left double click we were missing, he can now craft a pick and a torch :)
I may have to install the game soon so I can be a better help for him and maybe start a local co-op with him, I guess this would be a good way for him to learn the basics of this game :)

Ark can be very unforgiving, especially in the early stages, If your son has already started playing, something tells me that, when you do get it installed, he will be helping you a lot rather than the other way around :p the learning curve is very steep at the start.

Ark can be very unforgiving, especially in the early stages, If your son has already started playing, something tells me that, when you do get it installed, he will be helping you a lot rather than the other way around :p the learning curve is very steep at the start.

It's a shame that such an unforgiving, but interesting game doesn't have a tutorial that teach you the basics of the UI before leaving you on your own.

mouse over the item you want to craft and press 'E' or right click to 'craft' that item.

as mentioned above you have to 'learn' new items in the Engram Tab but you have atleast one item by default (maybe more) the pick so just mouse over and press E

edit: double click is ok but if your crafting from a bp and have a storage open it will 'transfer' the bp not craft it. so "E" or right click is better to use

Wildcard plan on adding a tutorial at some point down the line. just try not to get too frustrated with bugs, glitches and lag. I have to try not to get frustrated on a minute by minute basis in-game :p

Sounds great, I probably will get a bit frustrated as I have with other early access games like: Stranded Deep(buggy), Subsistence(extremely hard), Landless(extremely buggy), Rising world(Minecraft clone) and a few other early access survival games - I love the concept of it all and sometimes I have to walk away from the computer to cool off *lol*

Just pointing this out but every game (that ive encountered at least) gives you a layout telling you what key is bound to what .

as does ark, (in a way) press escape, click options, all bound keys are on the right and can be changed.
