im almost 90% sure it will there are few items that do not and thats the darts them selfs mostly
But if you have asc crossbow with 250% damage .....
crossbow with 250% damage better than this harpoon
so if there no rarity of harpoons it useles =(
Your 250% crossbow is better in every way.
The training dummy is your friend. I was also curious about the comparison between a crossbow and harpoon gun and wasn't finding much in the way of actual data, just a lot of opinions and assumptions. So I built a range and did some testing so I could see where the actual math is.
TLDR:
All other variables aside, the harpoon gun does a lot more dmg to underwater targets, per shot than the crossbow, but it's junk for anything other than using nets above water. If you have a decent crossbow (such as yours at 250%) you're better off using that.
Data:
Both weapons were tested at baseline primitive quality (100%). Private server with no dmg tweaks that would favor one weapon over another. The numbers may vary from "official", but the side-by-side comparison is still valid. Distance from target did not seem to affect dmg output for either weapon.
Crossbow -
95 dmg center mass vs above water and underwater training dummy. Projectile drop unaffected by shooting above, below, into, or out off water.
1140 dmg over 30s
DPS = 38
RoF = aprx. 0.4
Durability = 100, -1 per shot
Harpoon Launcher -
80 dmg center mass vs above water training dummy, 185 dmg vs underwater training dummy. Projectile drop is very little while projectile is below water, and very severe while it's above water. This applies when shooting into or out of water as well.
720 dmg over 30s (above water)
1665 dmg over 30s (below water)
DPS = 24 (above water)
DPS = 55.5 (below water)
RoF = aprx. 0.33
Durability = 100, -1.5 per shot
Conclusion:
Feel free to do your own testing to verify, but the math I saw tells us these things:
1) If the target is underwater (even just a little) it takes much more damage from the harpoon launcher than if it isn't, regardless of whether the launcher was fired from underwater or not.
2) Harpoons launchers are good for nets and are in fact stronger than a crossbow underwater, however...
3) The harpoon launcher takes more damage from firing than the crossbow, and you'll only get 67 shots out of it before it breaks whereas the crossbow will get you 100.
4) If you get a crossbow at about 146% it will do basically the same DPS as a 100% harpoon launcher underwater, which means any percentage higher than that will give the crossbow a higher DPS than the harpoon launcher even underwater where the launcher is normally better. At that point the launcher is useless unless you like to shoot nets.
