Using just half pipes on the bottom still guides fire balls and boulders nicely.
But you cannot place an object "on" a half pipe. If you were to use a spring for launching and had it attached to a decoupler block at the back of a half pipe cannon, then you would have to place the boulder on the decoupler block (which will put it inside the half pipes)
Hope that helps. It would be nice if they had made it so boulders and fire balls could just be placed on the half pipe.
I was wanting to use them as a sort of 'hopper' to hold several rounds of ammo, which I could then roll one-by-one into a holder after it had fired and reset.
Sneaky. I like that, lol. I'll be sure to give that a shot next time I'm in-game.
(I still think it should've been a standard function, but so long as there's an easy workaround like that, I'll mumble "alpha" and get over it.) :p
