Do I have to play the prequels?
^

Im really interesting in Lightning Returns but I have never played the sequels.
Can I play it without being too confused about the story?

There's in-game summary of the previous games.
Also you can read synopsis on Wikipedia or watch all cutscenes on YouTube. FFXIII was extremely linear and repetitive, so I'd recommend to skip it.

Thats what I wanted to hear.

Thanks :)

Yeah you can play Lightning Returns without playing the first two. But to be frank Lightning Returns isn't as good, its almost like playing a single player MMORPG. The side questing is pretty annoying. The first one is the best in my opinion. Lightning Returns does have a great combat system though.

If i were you, i'd play the first 2 series cos i'm too lazy for reading xD
But the choices still up to you, for me the storyline a bit complicated than any other FF series. Need some time for me to completely understand whats goin' on. So if u quick learner then go ahead and skip.
FFXIII, FFXIII-2, LR:FFXIII. All have different battle system, if you want to enjoy unique battle experience i reccomend try all of 'em. Most people enjoys the second series tho.
And don't trust any reviews or opinion on this trilogy, too many people have different opinion. Some say the first is the best, some say the second, the others say the third. So just go ahead and try for urself :)
Hope this help..

Sure, you can skip it if you really have no interest in playing the other games. You will be missing out on a lot of the characters personalities and the context of what happened in the past.

The game does give you text that you can read to cover the absolute basics but it doesn't do much more than that. I'd feel like I missed a lot if I just went straight into LR but to some people that isn't important I suppose.

If you mildly liked LR, you MUST play the prequels, the ending is all about the characters and you will get there and know only Lightning ... bummer

Actually, XIII and XIII-2 have the same battle system, except they tweaked it following player feedback in XIII-2.

It is the same battle system, except in LR you use the skills manually, but on the others you "queue" them and only trigger when you want (or auto, which basically trigger them when ATB is full), oh, and auto also automatically select the best skill you have against the target, while in LR you have to look at the enemy stats and choose yourself.

I agree there are differences on the battle system on all 3 games, but the reason I think you should play is the plot and characters, obviously. Gameplay-wise I don't think there is any urge, I liked LR gameplay more.

LR uses the same basic concept, but is not the same at all. There are no set roles and there's a bigger freedom to customization.
