a very good game as each battle can be as long as 1 hour. and at 72 years old it stops the boredom ,and I played this when it first came out.

One of the best games in Total War history. Even in 2022 this game is still playable and interesting. AI is very strong and wise that in expert difficulty you'll meet many problems.

Saw a lone Swiss King hold off a 1000 strong army of mounted Holy Roman Imperial knights.
Killed the Pope with a catapult.
Launched a crusade against Paris.
Had a king terrified of bald, bearded men. Later, his attempted assassin was a bald, bearded man, whom he killed with a cooking spit.
Brought down the last king of Poland under a hail of musket fire.
Desperately needed heirs so forced my last prince to marry his sister.
Assassinated the Khan of the Golden Horde, causing his empire to collapse in its infancy.
As Egypt, bribed the garrison of Rome into betraying the Papacy and handing me the keys to the city.
Had a militia sergeant survive countless battles to become a one-man morale-14 powerhouse that could carve through an enemy spear formation like they were butter. He later became royal chancellor and governor of Ireland, married a princess and died aged 60. To my knowledge, he never did learn to read.

1000/1000 Best total war game to date.

My first TW game, I played it thousands of hours. The portraits, the soundtrack, the wargamish campaign, everything is perfect and the AI is very challenging. I kept a modified copy of the game on my hard drive since Win 7 was released. I can't say how happy I am to see my favorite game on steam. Best day ever !

People are complaining about this game not running in Windows 10. I have W10 x64, with two monitors, primary using Radeon card and secondary using in-chip video. The game runs without any problem following this recommendation HERE . As I said, not a single problem or crash despite I am running mods, not vanilla game.

Yes, Medieval Total War: Viking Invasion is really outdated in the graphics and mechanics departments. But, who cares?

Don’t let my Steam playtime fool you. I have played countless hours, both vanilla and moded versions of the game. And I think it can hold its own against vanilla and even moded Rome and Medieval 2 (which in my opinion are way superior to later franchise offers).

What does Medieval Total War: Viking Invasion have to offer? Basically, the best battle tactics of the series. It is seriously good. Maneuvering your troops is actually possible in order to obtain battlefield superiority. Real good. On the other hand, bridge battles as chokepoints can get old fast.

What is Medieval Total War: Viking Invasion lacking? Apart from the visual aspect, the campaign mechanics are outdated. It boosts a Risk type map, poor diplomatic options and a very simplistic commerce model.

Ah, and don’t you forget about community mods. They are a blast to play. They expand the game to quality and challenge levels that are difficult to imagine. Redux, XL, Pike and musket, NTW, … Check them and some others HERE [www.twcenter.net].

In summary: at 2€ when on sale, Medieval Total War: Viking Invasion is a gem for battlefield tacticians that can live with outdated graphics and game mechanics. Mods will extent the fun a loooooong time.

I remember battling the Holy Roman Emperor as King of the Danes. I remember charging my Irish kerns and lobbing javelins at rows of French Knights. I remember bribing El Cid and bringing Valencia into the Spanish Empire to battle the encroaching Moors. I also remember being in 5th grade and writing down my accomplishments and drawing pictures of stick people depicting the great sieges I partook in.This was Total War... and I loved it. It's really good to have one of my favorite games of all time back and working on Windows 8.1. It even supports my native 1920x1080 resolution. This is easily the best 9.99 I've spent in months. That is until I partner it with the original Shogun.

*HOW TO FIX CRASHING ISSUE* (for me anyway)

1. Go to video settings and change battle and campaign map resolutions to 1024 x 768.
2. If crashing in campaign (mine crashed at the transition from early to high period) - turn off auto-save. This can be found in the wide arrow attached to the right side of the minimap.

Other things you can go include verifying the game files, reinstall etc.

I've gone over 240 turns and had it crash once. Once the fix was made, no more issues. The game is as it was when I first played it 17 years ago - a lot of fun and a different campaign dynamic with the risk style campaign map as opposed to the 3D environments later adopted by CA.

UPDATE CHANGE THE DEFAULT RESOLUTION SETTINGS FROM 800-600 to higher resolution as this will probably be the major cause of crashes it was for me most computers are to powerful for the lower resolution causeing the game to crash.

I remember playing this game years ago when it first came out this game made creative assembly it's a classic hit still highly playable today beats a lot of stratagy games on steam, when I saw it on steam I added it to my cart instantly bought it do not regret it playing on a 32inch screen easily visible ratios like it was built to be played on bigger screens.

Pros
+ classic total war the reason why they were bought by sega
+ good interface both on Battlefield and campaign map not like rome two or attilla
+ Music and sound effects are nice
+ Four Campaign periods to choose from all offering unique challenges
+ all factions ulocked to play with there starting positions change depending on the period you choose each comes with a good backstory set up that adds to the nostalgic nature of the game.
+ surprising amount of depth from crusades, agents, family heirs, traits, rebellions, vast construction tech tree, unique faction units all descriptions, fleet contruction, trade routes, Historical events, disasters, you can even marry your daughter and son together through your warned of the consequences, long lost enemies reapearing becasue an heir escaped. The list goes on custom battles, historical campaigns, religion.
All the ideas of creative assembly are in this game even if it can be seen as a little simplistic now the game makes up for it's nostalgic depth of character thats perhaps missing from games such as empire and napoleon.

- Maybe new total war fans won't like this game due to it's older style
