So all of Japan has rallied against me...
I'm just curious if this is a scripted event, or not. I had the best tech in all of Japan, with powerful, long-time allies with wedded ties... but then everyone declares war on me randomly?

GOOD FOR YOU ARE SCREWED(depending on the difficulty level on this lol)
Scripted as far as I know. It has to do with negative diplomatic points you get when becoming too powerful. Once you're powerful enough to be a threat to the Shogun, everyone will declare war on you. Not all at once of course. Had the same happen to me. Clans I was allies with the entire campaign turned against me, and even my vasals attacked me. Even if you conquer a province and make the clan a vasal, they'll turn against you a few turns later.

i always choose a single powerful ally and just buy their loyalty :P me as the shimazu at shogun allied with the date both controlling pretty much all of japan XD

i too had a carefully constructed network of allies and trade but soon as divide hti full force all non allied forces turned and a few of the lesser clans i was allied with turned then when the first few of my major allies turned i realised i needed to try and keep an ally so i chose the date since they protected my entiire eastern and northern front so i could focus on my western and north western front (i couldnt conquour the mori and their allies)
Amatsu, I'm playing as Date and had aligned myself with Hatakeyama (holding the South East) and Imagawa (My West) and made vassals of the Mogami (in my center). Cementing those alliances meant I became entangled with Otomo, who I had no real contact with. And so, I helped the best way I could be invading Kyushu. Once the island was mine, the event was triggered and everyone in Japan suddenly had better technology, more money, and better and bigger armies.

Its a welcome challenge, but its hard not to feel somewhat cheated and the entire diplomacy aspect cheapened. I guess next time my strategy will be to disregard alliances and vassals altogether and simply conquer everyone from East to West.

I don't create military alliances, but vassals are a great way to boost daimyo honor (+3 max).
If you want to make friends go for long standing trade connections. Some games entire Japan is friendly (most even very friendly) by doing nothing more then trading. Note this is before realm divide, I always wait as long as possible to trigger it.
I never play short campaign either, feels like you need to rush to much imo..

heh well one reaosn is if you had trade with everyone you allied with the more goods you got access to the more they can advance, also i doubt they actually got that much it was probably just that they were all focusing everything they had at you rather than eachother
