How would a Total War game work in a WW1 setting
- 1 turn = 2 weeks
- War should be mainly focused on draining economy. Blockades are much more effective and a failed offensive will cost the opponent a ton of money, not to mention loss of morale.
- Armies facing each other over a border will engage in trench warfare. Each turn 5-10% will die due to artillery fire (the number of casualties depends on how much artillery you have defending the province). Since the entire western front is a huge trench line, the goal is to weaken one spot enough before breaking through with an offensive.
- Just like in Shogun or Medieval, place your army over an enemy province to engage in a battle. Battles should be similar to Empire TW, but with more focus on artillery and much, much larger armies.
- Propaganda is a very powerful; weapon. The morale of your nation is as important as your economy when it comes to recruiting soldiers. Towards the end you can issue drafting/conscription, but that will piss off the population, so propaganda is most effective way to increase your army.
- Submarines can be used on ships the same way assassins are used on generals
- Mobilization of troops (railway lines) is a lot more important than fortifications.
- Captured territory is pretty much useless (except for its tactical importance). Only the national provinces and industries can be developed and exploited.
- More useful espionage.
You'd just have to have waay more control on the campaign map to lay down barbed wire, construct your own trenches, Air support would work like naval bombardment does now, they could also work like agents do lwith cutscenes of how the raids go. The possibility to create your own railway lines instaed of just developing railroads in the places set for you, tech tree developing tanks, planes, mustard gas movies for propaganda and subs. Even a would war 1&2 total war in which the battles eventually are more based on you having to super micromange hundreds of platoons fighting building to building. Think men of war x's 20. Tech tree ends in the a-bomb.

I don't know how that would work out. I mean in Total war it's almost only been line formations. WW1 wasn't that formation how would you get all of the men to hide in the trenches?

Or else i could see it work.

That's a total war game i would buy times 20.

If there is gonna be a Total war WW1. Im gonna give 20 copies for free xD
And why. Because i doubt it will happen :/ first i would like to see a total war napoleon or empire 2 :P

Empire already covered the American Revolution.

so how are battles going to be? you load the game, see the battlefield and push one giant button that says advance to your death?

sorry it would be stupid

if they do it they should make battles continuesly, and much more macro orientated.. like hearts of iron or something.. but that would ruin the game..

Sounds like hearts of iron to me. (prehaps play that instead?)
call my crazy but I prefer my total war games being about guys swinging swords and spears at eachother.

Then you should be advocating shaka zulu total war. And hearts of iron is boring as fuq compared to the worst total war.

I see a lot of strategy, but no action. Probably an era best left to the hex-based genre.

There is no possibility of WW1 or WW2 Total War game. 20th century warfare is strange for total war series. Battles could last from a week to several months(for example Stalingrad in WW2 or Somme in WW1).How are they gonna depict that? I agree it is a good idea but quite impossible for a real time tactics game.

That's not necessarily true. A WW1: Total War is POSSIBLE, though they would have to invest a heck-load of money, and any time period after that would be impossible to make into an RTS.

All of the units would be in skirmish mode and there would be a fast press to get tank tech to break any stalemates.

i think to have a ww1 mod wouldnt work, simply because it is to static. I think a better idea would be to have a period of history say 1880 ish (boer war) -1945. That way it could include a progression of the tech tree. The same alliances would exist so war is more or less inevitable, especially as thats kind of the point of the game.

When the game progresses to 1914, and the tech tree is up to that technological point, then players will have the option to build trenches, it would be stupid not to as tanks wont exist yet but machine guns do. it would be fairly historically accurate, in the france- german war germany won partly due to their use of railways, the technological advancement is key to victory.

As mentioned in the first post about national morale, i think their can be a management of ideology as well, for example fascism takes hold in the 1930's, and some in your nation would be sympathetic, so something else for you to manage.

air battles would be difficult but not impossible.

i agree with overdrive the american civil war would be good too, but again i wouldnt limit it to that. Other nations had a big impact on that war, i would have the whole world open like in empire total, war. Quite easy if your are great britain, but it would be huge empires vs huge empires.

World War 1? No problem:

There are also WW1 mods for Empire and Napoleon.

It would completely differ from the previous games but it sounds like an Interesting idea. A world war game would be much more about paradigm change then the average total war game with its static units. At some point the game would be reduced to getting the material and the cannon fodder into the battle lines, while the battles itself, apart from choosing the terrain, would not offer many tactical options.

Total War does not work too well with guns, as they don't provide enough feedback. In Rome one could easily grasp the concepts of riding into the back of a unit with cavalery. In Empire it felt diffuse and one could not really see the tactics anymore. So my main problem would be that the designers would have a hard time, showing any effect of one's strategies apart perhaps from the obvious artillery hits.

Why do all ww1 games look like ♥♥♥♥? They all look like hearts of iron or victoria. Why not make a ww1 game that looks like total war?
