The Otomo clan sucks As*
It turns out that unless your fond of playing factions whose speicalty is something that isn't that great any way, the Otomo clan isn't for you. Bows are able to get fired faster and further away. I boudht the dlc cause i thought rifles would be a step up from bows, but they suck!

You'd think a non sequitur like the above comment would kill this thread, but alas, such was not to be the case.

ya, nobody has rifles in the base game.......

It seems you don't know how to use matchlocks. ( they are not actually rifles) They crush morale and also unlike most bow units they easily cut through samurai units. Tho if you didn't know this already i doubt you have used them before and a re just going by numbers.
This guy is truly right. Don’t piss off Otomo clan because you are suck at controlling a gun squad that is dangerous enough to win a difficult battle.
Matchlock units for Otomo are pretty strong at the start they can rout Ashigaru Units with 1 or 2 volleys Plus it is also a good idea to back them up with archers for their range.

the necro is strong in this one:
Early game: 2 Matchlock ashigaru in standard army-> win
Late game: Port Terco and gg. No bow unit can kill them easily, especially not on walls or in the woods. Their melee is insane.
Matchlocks are really only good in a siege defense. Early on in the game this is really nice to have and it makes Otomo deal well with an extremely tough starting position surrounded by hostile threats. Later on in the game you don't need to defend many castles so matchlocks kinda become not so useful. In an open field battle they'll get only off one or two shots before enemy melee troops swarm them. You can run them behind your own charging melee troops but then they become useless because they can't fire effectively past your troops.

In any case with Otomo (or any Christian clan) you can just spam overpowered missionary rebellions to destroy every clan on the map. And European trade ships are very OP as well.

Donderbuss suck because they get off one shot before having to run away. Best thing to do is get them off their high horses and put them on walls in siege defense where they can hilariously blow away the enemy.

I cant believe someone zombified my thread from 7 years ago! Lol. Anyway, when I first got the dlc i thought i could fight with them like in empire total war and get ten of them, line them up and destroy everything. I got destroyed instead. It was only after posting this thread that i realised how to use them effectively
Resurrecting it.

Otomo is a polarised faction.

They suck at open field battles. Period. Winning on an open field with their guns, even the tercos is hard. Damn hard. (Against a samurai army)

You need a hill. So your guns have a line of sight.
If you don’t get one. You’re stuffed in a field battle.
From a castle wall though, you will consistently get heroic victories. Especially if the fort has 2 walls. Then your guns dominate.

I only play legendary, and I probably suffered the most land defeats I’ve ever had in a campaign with otomo.


Campaign map. Your starting position is somewhat decent but tricky. You need to block the status of Buzen with your little boat, and send a few boats to reinforce it after a while.

You need to aggro ASAP.
Winning the war for Kyushu is hard. As you’re the only Christian. Meaning you can’t do rapid aggro.

Your priests are god tier,
Better than monks. They get big bonuses to spreading a faith, and big bonuses in inciting rebellions early on.

Your nanban trade ships are also highly important. They will keep your clan in the black on the trade nodes. The only faction that can try ti contest with a navy in legendary.


If you prefer a campaign map approach, and avoiding field battles. Otomo is awesome.

If you like field battles, play as the date or shimazu.
