only make allies early game. late game, they just get in your way, and will turn on you in realm divide. you might want to conquer EVERYTHING, or at least as much as you can until realm divide.

Keep your faction leader's honor high. At least 4 stars of honor & you should be able to keep allies.

and make sure you build enough armies when RD hits ingame.

I do not think this is correct - I have had Daimyo with 6 honor and alliances by marriage, trade, mutual protection, even hostages and still my allies (and vassals) betrayed me within 10 turns of the realm divide event. Realm divide adds a cumulative negative effect every turn to any relationship and doesn't stop until it hits -200 or so. The only time I have been able to keep an ally is if after realm divide I conquer a province and resurrect an old clan as a vassal. That clan will be unaffected by the realm divide "debuff."

Realm divide happens when you reach a certain amount of provinces. In Fall of the Samurai it is 19 and I believe in Shogun 2 it is 21. So stop expanding at 18/20 provinces and spend a few years building up your power. Try to have a choke point or at least only be moving in one direction (Date, Shimazu, Otomo - Satsuma, Saga, Aizu, Nagaoka). I will typically try to make sure I have at least 2 fleets on my north and south shores for invasion fleet interception. I will also be thinking out my land attack routes while building up. You will typically need at least 2 armies moving together to keep your front straight - more likely you will need 3. (Think: Operation Barbarossa but without Hitler to screw it up) Try to make a reinforcement stack for each of those fronts - if too expensive just make ashigaru reinforcements but the main stack in each army group should be samurai.

Key is knowing when Realm Divide will hit and preparing for it. Good luck.

don't fill that little bar, develop your economic buildings to get ready for RD, get ready to beat the ♥♥♥♥ out of your neighbors the instant RD hits, do it, vassalize them (they don't lose relations after RD) so you can have trading partners, keep vassalizing and defending whoever you can, you'll need the trading income.

You can also make a sea elevator, keep several bow kobayas within range of eachother in the sea, if you need to move an army board a bow kobaya, merge with the next, leave the one without movement points behind, move to the next, and so on, so on, you can cross the entire map in a single turn this way.

keep a few fleets @ both sides of the country to stop invaders, you don't want an army landing at your capital, I also tend to leave a cheap army, mostly ashigaru and some gunners behind as an emergency defensive force.

Other than that just hope your preparations were enough, after you get used to RD it becomes quite easy really, oh and being old allies with a large clan far away helps, a lot, it will take some time for them to start hating you and they will exhaust your enemies resources for quite a while.

Well I have been able to keep my allies through the realm divide before. The other thing I did was what you said. I stopped invading right before the realm divide & waited for the negative effects on diplomacy to go down from my recent invasions before invading again. I guess the combination of the two was how I was able to do it. ;)

take 12 regions then stop and develop them, build massive armies , plan your route to attack , break economies of your biggest rivals and hold tight its going to get bumpy
Fromage Jan 3, 2014 @ 2:21am
Plan your expansion wisely, expand in such a way, so that you only have one front to fight in. DONT expand too fast, or have too high honor, because it will speed up realm divide. (In FOTS, the amount of regions you take is set in stone) Take about 3-5 regions intially, then stop for a bit then continue.

When I start, i pick a 'side' of Japan to conquer first.
Date, Uesugi, Takeda, Hojo = North (right side of the map)
Shimazu, Mori, Choksokobe, Ottomo = South (left side of the map)
Oda, Hattori, Ikko iki, Tokugawa = North

Make allies or have good relations with clans that are opposite to the side you picked. Eg. as Takeda, i usually ally with the strong clan in the center. Usually Ikko iki or Oda. When i declare war on a clan whose territory i want, i DONT call allies for help. They might end up capturing some of that territory instead. They might even stay with u for a while after realm divide, and act as a buffer.

As you are expanding, build buildings that generate money, over military ones. You dont want to be making most of your money with Trade Income. B/c sooner or later Trade Income= 0.
Have designated military recuitment regions. It should be your home region intially, later make it a region(s) with blacksmith specialty. Having superior weapons makes battles easier. I can get +6 melee attack.

Before realm divide
build up a strong navy that have cannons, the AI usually dont have any ships with cannons. This will allow you dominate the seas, and protect you from invasions in your less protected regions. Also build armies with buff stats, +6 melee attack for melee units, etc.
Train up a few ninja, this will allow to sabotage armies, allowing you to divide and conquer.
Position your armies to take a lot of enemy territory, right before realm divide.

Doing the above things, makes realm divide really fun to play. Good luck
I played Shimazu and made an alliance with Amako. Then I occupied 18 regions and stoped for a while. I let other factions expand until only 5 factions remained, including my own. Then I occupied Kyoto and built up my armies. A couple of rounds later the remaining factions turned against me, but I could held up my ally, so we fought 2 vs. 3. The only problem might be your seasonal income.
Rogue One Jan 3, 2014 @ 6:06pm
Just keep expanding and building up and researching. For a while it might be slow, but once your clan gets going you'll have no problem with money. Factions will drop like flies. Eventually it'll come down to you and a handful of other clans.

And don't go for Kyoto unless you have towns near it. Odds are you'll be at war with everyone by then, and you'll need to have good defenses on your frontlines towns.
