Shogun - The Novel
Since there is no Off-Topic section, I'll just post here.

Also, sorry for the misleading title - it is not about Shogun 2 ;)

So, I am a big fan of the (late) author James Clavell.

He wrote "historical fiction", meaning his settings where precise and well
researched, but the characters are (mostly) fictional.

So he wrote the classic novel "Shogun" - One of my all time favorites.

If you are into TW Shogun 2 and the least bit interested in reading, give it a try -
this may very well be the single most interesting story you've ever read.

Also, everyone who actually knows what I'm talking about may comment, of course!

For the lazy people, there actually is a TV series from the 80's based on this novel.
It's not that good, sadly, at least IMHO.

Ahh, no, but I've seen the oldschool movie triology based on that.
They where pretty awesome even though they're old.

Thx for bringing that back to my mind, will see if I can pick it up.

Too bad about the language, though, as I like to read the author's native language.
My Japanese is nowhere near a level that would work on, lol.

That's what I meant ;)
I also dislike most of that popcorn cinema crap that passes as a movie these days.

But there are also a lot of old and even black and white movies that are pretty...bad.

And yeah, I've seen Seven Samurai. That one is very good, too.

Also, Lone Wolf and Cub (Kozure Ōkami) is awesome, even though
the acting is really bad, haha. I love it.

Kagemusha I have not seen, I believe. Will try that one.

Well, not really novels, but the "Prince Valiant" ...comics, I'll call them, are wicked
I'm pretty sure you know them (if only by reputation), but it may well be the very first
serious-themed "comic". (Although it's just pictures with little text-blocks below).

The artist is Hal Foster, and it's from around the 1930's, iirc.
They also did a "re-release" in book-form with much more text and the pictures
beautifully integrated into the pages.

In case you don't know it: The main character is a Prince (duh) of Thule, that
half-mystical Skandinavian country (in essence, a Viking prince).
So lots of info about skandinavian folklore and stuff in there, also about basically
any medieval setting (he actually went everywhere, more or less).

I have to warn you, though, that I would call that "historical fantasy" because there's
mythical stuff, too (not least King Arthur and his Round Table).

I have read a few of griff hoskers books and they are spanned throught history from the romans to napoleon. if you are looking for a medieval type of book look for the aeltheread series (i think that's how it's spelt). also look out for ' angels in iron' , sorry but i don't know who wrote it 'cause i can't find my copy. both of these books are great in my opinion. :)
