Total War: SHOGUN 2

Total War: SHOGUN 2

Shogun 2 - Directx 9 or 11 choice crash (SOLUTION FOUND!) - (CLOSED)
This is a very recent problem that I've had in the past few days. I start up Shogun 2 and it gives me the usual options in the dark grey (steam style) box with all usual graphics options:

- Play Total War: SHOGUN 2
- Encyclopaedia
- Benchmark DX11 Graphics High 1080p
-Benchmark DX11 Graphics Balanced 720p
-Benchmark Game Settings
- Benchmark DX9 Graphics Balanced 720p
- Benchmark DX9 CPU

I click 'Play Total War:SHOGUN 2' as I always have done and it use to load up fine. But now...it gives me a new option in a grey (windows style) box.

A DirectX11 compatible graphics card adapter has been detected.

Select one of the following modes:

- DirectX 9
- DirectX11

Running in DirectX11 mode enables additional graphics options not available in DirectX 9 mode.
You can change between DirectX modes in the front end grahpics options.

Whatever option I click on it does not work, just goes to the loading screen and stays there forever. I've search googled and still can't find a solution and it is driving me towards sepuku.

All I've done is download a recent abode update and that's when the problem started I guess. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you!

Try the "restore" option on ur pc and don't update adobe, or verify ur game.

Hey thanks for the advice but I tried the restore option and that didn't work :/ Verified the game it says it's fine, I still cannot find a solution to this online o.O I'd had shogun for years and never had this problem, wtf is going on!!

I opened "browse local content" and started the game up from the folder. It now says

"We have detected that your Steam installation has been corrupted and the game will now exit. This is usually due to an attempt to play a pirated copy of teh game, but may in some cases be caused by a virus or a cheat program...." Blah blah.

Of course I have a genuine copy (I can prove it with a pic of my game case) and I have bought all the add ons on steam. I do have a virus on my computer I think because I never use to get pop up ads on steam and now I do (since the problem started). It's really quite annoying, now my game doesn't work and I get adverts to top it off. So I guess the problem is a virus. Do I really have to uninstall steam? Won't that uninstall all my other games o.O Does anyone know a decent free virus program please? Help would be greatly appreciated doing in my noggin' :/

Hey Zipp, thank you very much for the suggestion, avg is very good I've had it a long time just this particular virus was stubborn. For anyone else having this problem, finally found a solution and got Shogun 2 to work, still odd pop-ups but at least the game is working.

Check this site:

It's going to be a bit time consuming and annoying, but you need to go through every anti-virus program and use them in the order described. I did a virus check twice with each to make sure. "HitmanPro" seemed to get rid of most of them so if you're impatient like me try that first, but do it in order, it'll be worth it when it works again. This will take roughly an hour.

JUST REMEMBER: Read carefully, don't install any extra add-ons they offer (only thing 1 does) and uninstall if after use if you like. SHOGUN FINALLY WORKS! IT'S ALIVE!!!

Hey agent thanks for your post. I've had the same message pop up with Directx 9 and 11 neither work. I've just recently got shogun 2 and at the same time i upgraded to windows 10 so wondering if maybe that had something to do with it. I'm going to try your solution but i haven't had any problems with pop ups, not sure if we are having the same problem.
Baelor Brightflame Feb 17, 2016 @ 12:42pm
A lot of this anti virus sites don't work on Windows 10, has anyone else had similar problem to mine?
jesselless Jul 3, 2016 @ 11:46am
empty virus scans did nothing, wonder why... so if a virus isn't the problem how do i fix this damn good game?
Agent Abdulla X Jul 4, 2016 @ 7:18am
dat boi, sorry bro I'm at a loss to explain I'm not sure why. I can only suggest re-installing the game, re-installing steam, basically delete everything and start afresh. Has the problem happened recently? Installed any other programs recently? If you give me some details I'll try read up on online and see if I can find a solution because I know how much of a pain this is!
