there's also a good tutorial about it
i really like it but it can be hard if you just started anyway you still gain exp even if you lose
or you just play the normal battles as known from earlier TW titles
about the activity.. Avatar Conquest can take some time.. but in the normal battle mode i always find something
It is still very popular, but the time one has to put in is quite a bit to be considered good. I would not begin immediately with multiplayer. I suggest that you finish at least 1 single player campaign before entering the MP scene.
Rise of the Samurai adds units to the Shogun 2 avatar roster. Naginata/Sword attendants + some cheap hybrid melee/bow cav units.
Shogun 2 Avatar campaign has a smaller map compared to FotS Avatar map.
You start with a limited roster of units to play with and you have to fight and win battles to unlock more territory on the campaign map (which give you units, retainers, or armor pieces).
There are 3 battle types that you can play. 1v1 , auto-team , and campaign drop-in.
1v1 is the most common and you can obtain a battle within 5 minutes. The timing depends on how busy S2 MP is. For example, expect the MP scene to be more active during the weekends than the weekdays, and for the afternoon to be busier than the morning (depending on time zone).
auto-team ... I have yet to try it, but the battles that I have seen on youtube seem quite ferocious. The map you have your battle upon is still the same size, it just has more players upon the field.
campaign drop-in allows you to drop into another player's single player campaign. Instead of the person playing SP fighting the AI it will be you. Though you only gain Avatar exp from this rather than possible veteran units/exp.
No matter the battle type you chose or which game you play MP on, all of the maps will be the same, except for the campaign drop-in since those will be on the SP campaign map.
Very healthy multiplayer community compared to say Napoleon and much, much more depth to it.
Yeah a lot of people still play. I even get drop-in battles during campaign still (probably from new people getting the sale;)
The Avatar battles can get kind lame though because people tend to spam OP units of veterans. You can always host or join a Classic Battle though, which is old school TW where units don't have a bunch of bonuses.
Lol "op spam of veteran units". Did you notice that veterans cost more koku?:) did you notice that they die as fast as unskilled units, when you fire into them with matchlocks or bows?
Sure that a correctly skilled lvl6 nag monk is incredible strong in melee, but a cheap bow cav or a direct hit of no dachis counter it. You just have to see your advantages in a battle, when your enemy masses high skilled units, and that is map control.
