Getting a nanban trade port while staying Buddhist
Dear fellow S2TW players,

At the moment I am playing as the Mori clan (darthmod with a lot of other mods)...right now the portugese knocked on my door to ask if I am willing to trade with them through the nanban trade posts.

I promised myself at the beginning of my campaign to stay buddhist (because I want to recruit the warrior monks :D). However I am hesitating wether I should go for the nanban ♥♥♥♥ or not. I LIKE THE COINS hehe but I dont like christianity...is it possible and above all, is it worth it to allow the portugese to stay there while I compensate the christian zeal with my buddhist monks/zeal? (the mori got a temple in their home province so...)
Let me know what you think.

Tnx Anywy!

There is a way to do so.

You need level 2 temples. Also, don't rush the building of the nanban port until you are sure you can have the temples ready. You need a minimum of 3 level 2 Buddhist temples: 1 in the nanban province and 2 in the surrounding provinces OR 3 level 2 temples in the surrounding provinces.

*Level 2 Buddhist temple = 1.5 spread of religion in the province + 1 to neighboring provinces.
*Nanban Port = 3.5 spread of Christianity.

Monks are also a good way to combat the religion issue as well, though usually you want to use them elsewhere (either assisting against agents and armies or going against Ikko Ikki religion).

I decided to go for the nanban trade. I placed a monk in my settlement, so the christian zeal is compensated. In my previous campaign (as the chosokabe) I went for christianity (just as the shimazu and otomo). It defenitely gives you several advantages, but for this campaign I wanted to stay buddhist. Just for the sake of campaign diversity :)

I watched another player conquer a Christian clan and had constant rebellions untll his monks got a handle on it and it took time. Once rooted, they are hard to root out. Be careful.

Christian domains should always be micro-managed via monk conversions before annexing it.
Which was obviously not done by that player unless he was intending to use the rebellions as a mean of training his troops.

I don't remember if he tried to find out if they were Christian. His plan for conquest was well thought out, but the Christian issue came as a surprise. It may have been his first experience with them. I turn down the nanban trade, although fire arms are very effective and tempting.

The thing about the Nanban trade request is that the port is not automatically built upon agreeing to their request.
Accepting the request will only provide you with the option to establish a Nanban port on any domain to your discretion.

Firearms are effective in the hands of the defendant and more so when you are besieged.
As Musashi wrote, the arquebus is the strongest weapon in the field until swords are clashed.
But this will depend on the situation and strategy of the player so i don't need to dive further on effectiveness. :)

I here you HikaruSayers. That gunfire from a wall is impressive. I've seen it melt units away as they approach the fortress.

I have only started Shogun 2, but it was watching videos of campaigns that sold me on the game and I seen what different units can do, also that is where I saw the Christian rebellions create havoc to the poor Buddist Daimyo. I will probably break down and get guns when I am more experienced with the game.

I agree that firearms are a powerful asset to your castle defences. Indeed your enemy's troops disintegrate completely by hitting their morale. This strategy helped me tremendously when I played as the otomo. In the beginning of my campaign, I felt desperate and lost about the approaching enemy stacks. Most of the time I was outnumbered by 1:3 (or even 1:4!) But luckily my matchlocks proved their worth, even the samurai and monk units (ok this last type has low armor) broke eventually.
