Bamboo walls are a defensive ability only available to range units. Your army must not move for at least one turn, this allows them to "dig in". Then they have to be attacked by another army.

The best way to pull this off would be moving your army next to a bridge that a enemy faction will have to cross.

No, only in Deployment phase.

I would add that it is only for arquebuse units. Archers get "shield screen."

And yes, they are awesome in bridge battles....enemy charges across only to find itself in a "box" of walls :)

I once created such a box in empire... The A.I was too dumb(or tointelligent?) to cross the small and long bridge and crossed the river a few kilometers north. My beautiful plan....

If the A.I. doesn't move, it just means that the A.I. broke. lol

And if there's no time limit... good luck waiting xD

No, they crossed the river elsewhere so i had to form a boring normal line... it could have been so beautiful... hordes of hannoveran soldiers, running into a box of trenches, stepping on mines that shoot exploding grenades... but no!
But sometimes in medieval 2 the A.I plays defensive while besieging me.I would have won the battle against knights with my milita units.I even managed to place a cannon right next to heir ladders and one knight was even watching the cannons(standing next to it) while i was destroying their ladders. They retractet them and went back to spawn...waiting

Does this work in FOTS as well? I've not seen these defences so far, so I presume not.

FotS units have other types of defenses, IRC.

I tend to play sengoku campaign way more than Fall, so I'm not 100%...but I think they can use gabeons or something in FotS.

I checked, and it seems that in vanilla there are no FoTS units able to either use Bamboo Wall or Oodate Pavise.

There is a mod though that enables some FoTS units to use them.
