Windows 10 and Shogun 2 - failed to launch - here's the fix

I had the same issues a bunch of folks had. Irregular since I didn't have problems playing Rome 2 and some other older games after installing Windows 10 PRO.

Try the following (first part is from the old tech support suggestions sticky - the second is my attempt at genious.) :) Feedback appreciated if anyone runs into glitches or it fails for them.

you attempt to launch Shogun 2 from Steam and nothing happens:
1) Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\total war shogun 2\redist
2) Run the following installers:
- Flashsecurity.exe
- Flashsecurity1.exe
- Install most recent flash player - (the one in the folder there will tell you it's too old - click the link it gives you to update to newest Flashplayer directly at the maker's website. THEN
- Vcredist_x86.exe
- Vcredist_x86_90.exe
- Vcredist_x86-sp1.exe
3) Access the DirectX folder
4) Run DXSETUP.exe
5) Restart your PC and run Shogun 2

For Windows 8.0 / 8.1 / 10 and 10 Pro I would also do this:

Next - I right clicked the Shogun2.exe in the game's folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\total war shogun 2 (or wherever you installed it)
Select compatibility - change it to Windows 7

Save and then go play.

This seems to have worked for me in Windows 10 PRO

I ended up reinstalling the whole Steam application in order to fix the problems I had with this game and a few others who got weird on me. Reinstalled those games afterward and I was back in business finally.

if you change hardware then it can effect several games, i have no idea what this is about but something has change so many games of yours ?

I have Windows 7, but the game stopped working somewhy and refused to launch. I guess it happend because of my C++ redistributable manipulations. I tried to install newest versions but it didnt help. Reinstalling the game twice didnt help too. The game reacts badly on every C++ redistributable/Flash Player/Directx change. So its better to reistall this stuff from the game folder (as described) if issues happens. At least it helped me to run the game again. So thank you, Adam_N_Montana.

I am able to run the game on windows 10 in directx 9 mode but still the game has some serious buggs like it would crash when I start city battles

sounds like the amd castle attack issue

yes I have AMD that must be the problem thanks for the info

you need to download amd beta or crimson editions driver, newest version whatever that is beta or release

forgot to mention it work in dx9 not dx11 amd issue only

If I download the AMD crimson it will misidentifie my card I have a AMD radeon r5 m230 but after updating it thinks I have a AMD radeon HD 8500m and I will lose a lot of preformance I already reported the bug to AMD a few days ago I hope they fix it in the next update

and you sure you dl apu driver to the laptop, ofc you did, i doubt you can make mistake on such,
but again its amd issue please contact them and ask whats going on here.

you can roll back to old drivers if amd driver takes to long to fix

the drivers that where delivered with the laptop work fine and if I update the drivers with windows update it all works fine but if I download the drivers from the AMD site it will install the 8500m drivers I tryed both downloading the drivers for these specific type of card and the auto detect from the AMD site but the m230 is a rebranded/ overclocked 8500m that is probably the problem where the software starts to make mistakes

jesus AMD team you keep make so many mistakes, well i hope you can figure it out, but i still recommend you contact them with it so the next amd user dont get same buggy drivers or whatever id hardware they need to fix, we do same on nvidia then we see such odd things
