Exceptional Samurai
Does anyone know what the exact trigger for this is. I know it has to do with winning battles with samurai, but how many? Does it have to be armies of all samurai, or just a few.
I'm trying to find out so I can pause conquering just before to max out my stuff, & really want to know how many provinces I can take 1st. Will just using ashigaru allow me to take way more, or will it trigger something else?(Like exceptional ashigaru or something)

I think I have found it in the file.

It is an event that is in the Sengoku Jidai and Rise of the Samurai campaigns. It has a 10% chance of triggering when the following criteria are met:

Provinces owned: Min. 10
Units owned; Min. 40
Composition of army: Min. 70% samurai.

What is Exceptional Samurai?

Is it a trait, a Steam achievement, a Retainer?

I think it's an event? But I don't remember what it does. Here's an old topic about it but it's just full of gibberish.

Awesome! thank you very much. Good to know after all this time playing & triggering it before I was ready every time.

What do you get, a samurai unit?

As best I can figure it, you are able to recruit samurai with +2 experience levels for a few turns.

Unless you are playing on Easy and running 100% samurai armies, I cannot see this has any great utility.

I don't think I ever get to 70% samurai composition in my armies in the game - which is why I have no recollection of this event.

Ye 70% samurai is like realm divide stall meme territory. I wonder which units count as samurai in edge cases.

Infantry: Bow/Matchlock/Katana/Yari/Naginata/No-dachi samurai
Cavalry: Bow/Katana/Yari
Others that should count but probably don't: Daikyu samurai/Katana ronin/yari ronin/Hattori bandits/kiso ninjas/Portuguese Tercos/Donderbus cavalry/Tokugawa mounted gunners/Takeda fire cavalry/Mori Wako Raiders.

Even after Realm Divide I am running more than 30% non-samurai units in my armies. I prefer bow warrior monk + bow ashigaru combo instead of bow samurai, so that is 6 non-samurai immediately. Plus I keep a yari ashigaru contingent, with maybe a couple of naginata samurai as my defensive line and katana samurai for the counter. So I am probably around 50-60% samurai maximum - even at the end of the game.

Just for if anyone's curious; I'm cheating massively & have 100% samurai armies once they're available. My ashigaru are guarding forts. (My units actually make rather than cost money, it rules) I can get all my samurai bushido arts in 17 turns iirc. Thus I wanted to know how much I can get away with conquering before this triggered. Clearly I need to lay off making a ton of samurai right away, but I do like the archers. My armies are leader & 1 cavalry, 3 naginata, 3 yari, 3 katana, 3 no-dachi, 6 archer. Usually the archers kill everyone in the fort. Generally Shogun by 1551 on short campaign. I suppose I need to be more patient.

You do you. To me this sounds laughably stupid.

Amateur.

I made a mod that means I don't even need to load the game, in fact I don't even need to turn on the computer, and I have won the game on a Mega, God-Tier game difficulty that I created, that no-one else in the universe has access to.

Imagine how satisfying this is to me . . .

In the base game I've had it trigger before I've made any samurai units, and I've rarely had it trigger at a time where I want to make samurai. Perhaps in the dlc's there are criteria, but otherwise I think it's maybe random.

I don't see the point of this exercise though. If you're going make adjustments to give units negative upkeep (which would be the most game-breaking alteration you could possibly make), why do you have apparent qualms about using the same method to boost unit stats? Or why not alter the values of buildings so they all create units at max experience?

I just had this event happen in the foTS campaign. It happened as a result of me deciding to assasinate the person who was spreading western Ideology. Then a couple of turns later I got the exceptional samurai for a few turns it's cakled Rangaku.

Wait, there's a mod that makes buildings make max xp units instantly? Surprised I haven't seen it.
